I think it would be good if new members had to wait until they had about 10 posts or so before they were allowed to start new threads.
This would teach them the value of the 'search' function, rather than having fifty threads on the same topic, and works quite well on other boards i have been on.
Also, a side effect would be that it would pretty much eliminate any spam threads.

New people join because they have a problem and want to ask for help. I know if I had a problem and came across a forum that required X posts before starting a new thread, I'd skip that place completely.

Part of a moderators job is to remove spam. Considering there are 19 moderators, 10 administrators and 10 super moderators, there are plenty of people to keep spammers under control.

but don't we want to keep the regular posters happier rather than people who show up when they only have an issue, and promptly create a thread and waste server space because they can't bother searching for a question that has already been answered?

Spam is not an issue the biggest issue is links. I think there should be strict RULE on links. The links should be disabled.


Disable links in threads (people can just copy paste them) or wrap them in code. This is very important because I can send a link saying mbworld.org/forum..... and actually have it redirected to my "Malicious Server" and once they visit my site since cookies are open I can steal their cookie , Session to be exact and load it into my computer and visit mbworld.org and it will say "Welcome ......" Now I am logged in as the user.

I'm a new member to this forum, so please forgive me if my question sounds really silly.

I have recently bought S-class 320CDI ( Sept 04) plate, although it is a second hand car which had two previous owners before me, it has done about 72K on the clock.

However just recently I had some work done on it:

• Service B
• Change all four Brake Disc, pads,sensor
• Fault appeared known as EPC visit work shop error that appeared on the dsiplay screen

Even though I paid in total 975 pounds for the whole work after driving the car for a weeks the EPC error has appeared again. When it was looked at they could not find any faulty and it was suggested that I might have fuel petrol instead of diesel.....which was nonsense, then they came out with another suggestion to use cetain petrol station, as some station may use diesel that could cause the fault to appear....anyway I wasn't too convince with answer....and I don't want to take my car back to the same mechanic...I fear that he will charge me alot for just looking at it.

The Garage is not a Dealer but specialist in German cars....but I feel that they know that my knowledge on mercedes is very limited and over charge me.....bascially before the major work my right beam bulb had gone....I had to pay 30 pounds to get it replaced and now the left bulb has gone now!!

I live in Ilford East London, UK......please could some one recommend me a good/reliable mechanic that I can have this look at?

It takes courage to admit that you've given too much to a mechanic because he thought you didn't know what he was up to. There are some really helpful guys on the forum. Keep looking and you'll find them. Best of luck and welcome.

IMHO:

Clicking on advertisements comes first. Server space comes last, because there are so many ways to handle that, like paying slightly more for even more space than you could have obtained last year, or deleting old messages.

In the middle comes members who need help. I joined to get useful information. I discovered that informative posts were outnumbered by "pics" "rims" etc., but so what. If you can't show off a Mercedes, why buy it.

I don't think that already busy moderators would volunteer to go on rotation nights and weekends to scrutinize and remove certain kinds of postings or ban certain users. I know that members can be sorted by numbers of posts and be tagged as newbies. Maybe that would be a way to target new members who should be watched until they know the etiquette.

The search function won't win an award and might lead to too many redundant threads, but it's possible that existing members want fresh postings on an old topic. It might even give them a chance to feel important by commenting on an old subject. If it keeps veterans hanging on, there will be more advertisers and more clicks.

I didn't have to pay to much to join, so I'm not that fussy.
