... posts get ordered chronologically - in other words, beyond the 1st level threads are flat, instead of being tree-organized

you are correct. actually, i like it that way as it tends to keep the thread focused. if you need to, you can use the quote button to reply to a specific message.

ah ha! you can click on the little down arrow icon next to the thread subject and that will take you to the (oldest) newest message since you've last read... assuming you have cookies on.

yes, you are right. b/c of the single branch structure, you do have to wade thru the posts... you could setup your account to be notified when people reply, but that gets annoying. hopefully, not to many threads will get to three digits.
however, imho, vbulletin software's other advantages make it far superior to the older forum software. has anyone tried search?
