Question w210 e55 Brakes/Rotors

Hey guys,

I have a few quick questions for you, hoping to get a recommendation. I took my w210 e55 in for service and they told me that I need to replace my brake pads and rotors. Of course, since they are AMG's the quote they are telling me is $1350 . I am assuming that since this is from the dealership, the quote is expensive. However, I am skeptical of taking my car to somewhere that is less experienced with AMG than the dealership. So, here are my questions:

1. Is the cost reasonable?
2. Is there somewhere else that anyone knows of in the Las Vegas/Los Angeles area that you would recommend that would be less expensive?
3. Should I get it the replacement AMG rotors and brake pads?
4. Should I change out the entire system for something else (i.e. Brembo)? If so, do you have a rough idea how much this would run me?

Thanks in advance for your help! You guys are the experts!

1. Buy the rotors from www.tirerack.com
2. Buy the pads from Porterfield or you can buy some nice *** ones from www.tirerack.com

Make sure you get the frozen slotted rotors. They will far outperform other rotors uncluding stock.

There are no upgraded/slotted/drilled rotors available for W210 E55's without going to the complete Brembo setup. The stock rotors are fine (I have heard of them being drilled for looks, but IMHO that is a bad idea), but would benefit from cryogenic treating. If your brakes aren't making noise and the info center isn't telling you to service the brakes, tell the dealer to take a hike. The brakes should go for at least 50K. Brembo setup is several times the quoted amount, and honestly, do you need more brakes than you have now?? Probably not. I would definitely change to Porterfield or Axxis pads to reduce dust. You will also need new brake sensors, but they are cheap. No reason any competent brake shop couldn't do the work, but they usually won't install parts that you bring in. Check first.

Re: w210 e55 Brakes/Rotors

I have been hearing some squeaking from my brakes. However, no sensors are setting off in the car. According to the dealer, my front brakes have about 15% left in them. The car is at 42k miles.

Also, the perspective of needing "more" braking is excellent. You are absolutely correct in that I do not need any "more" braking that what originally came with the car. I was just considering Brembo as a result of the quote they gave me. Since it appears going that route will cost me more, I think i will stick with the stock AMG.

Thanks again for getting back to me... please keep them coming!

I'm not sure if you are only talking about just the front or all four.
I replaced my fronts 2 front rotors costs me $475 and new "dustfree" pads were $175. I did the labor myself and took me about 2 hours. It was as easy and doing all my other cars including my old Honda. This was only for the front, the back would have cost me another $300 with new rotors and pads. Most Indy shops will charge you about $75 to replace front and $75 for the back if you supply the parts.
BTW Fast 55 is right, there are no rotor upgrades for our car except Big Brakes kit $$$$. One thought is to go to the C32 calipers and cross drilled rotors.
Good luck
Mario

Sent PM, but: If you have 15% left, let it go until the info center tells you that you need brakes. The rotors are toast anyway (they shouldn't be turned at all), so you might as well take the pads down to nothing. Tire rack can get you rotors, pads, and the sensors for half of what the dealer wants when you're ready.

I saw a thread about 1 month ago that said Evosport had rotors for the w210 that didn't need any adjustments. They work with the AMG calipers. Am I wrong? I will try to post a link if possible. I have a 01 E55 and I am really thinking of making the change you might when it is ready for new brakes/rotors. I am thinking of Porterfields,(already have drill hole for sensor) also but I am a little concerned about noises. Is this a big deal?

I think I was wrong. I looked on the Evosport web site and it says for E55 but it might be the W211. Sorry!

New rotors only for the 211's. I have had the Axxis pads and now have Porterfields and I have had no problems with noise or performance. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain (clean wheels)

I saw on Brakeworld.com they have Disc Italia rotors (drilled) that are supposed to fit a W210 E55. Anyone know if these would be better and lighter than stock ones?

............I have a set of cross drilled and slotted front rotors for W210 E55. they have 500 miles on them. I also have a set of stock AMG calipers and pads. The pads have about 500 miles on them. I took them out because I finally changed to C32 brake kit for looks. If interested, pm me. Also, as an alternative you can change to C32 brakes yourself. They are very inexpensive. If you are not using stock rims, as in any big brake kit, your rims may not clear the brakes.

..............As to your question, I think the price you were quoted is too high. As others have said, you can get E55 rotors pads from other sources.

Never heard of these before, but they better be for $1,200.00 a set.

I believe you have to drill them yourself, Ted?

That shop below is great, I’ve serviced my AMG there and my previous W210 E320 along with couple of BMWs I’ve had along the years.
https://monacomotors.com/

Also mr MB motors is a great and honest MB shop. Worked with both and they both know what they’re doing. Based in San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles.

good luck
