Gladly I asked the dealer to quote it...Will find a local
MB mechanic who could do the job for much less I am sure. They did charge me bucks to find the problem though...Last time these guys are seeing me.

OK sounds like something similar is happening to me.
When the A/C is turned on, there is a slight hissing/squeaking noise that comes on and annoys the crap out of me when idling. I took it in and they replaced the belt tensioner and belt and it is still doing it. They are investigating it now, but could this be a hose leak as well??
Threadstarter, what were your symptoms?

No hose repair
No one "repairs repairs A/C hoses" so you need to understand what you are talking about. First if they tell you they can repair a hose get your car out of that shop ASAP. Now if they are talking about replacing a factory made A/C hose that fits in the same manor as the original then fine, they can do that. The price Some Hoses are an Assembly that includes High pressure fittings and hose with a manifold that is complex. Take ten minutes and call around and see what these hoses cost for your car or any other car, I think you'll find $950.00 might be fair. I bought one 10 years ago for a Saab $750.00 for one hose.

A/C repairs are not cheap. The hose itself could cost hundreds. Add in several hours of labor to find the problem, install the new hose, do a proper evacuation and re-charge of the system, and $$$$ is believable. If it's an older car running R-12 it's even more believable since the cost of R-12 is freaking outrageous now. What's most important is that they warrant their work, not what it costs.

Replacing an evaporator involves removing the entire dash. Not a chance in hell that with parts and labor it would cost $250. An evaporator alone costs around $800 if I'm not mistaken.

"Customer requests belts are still squelling when air is turned on. Found noise coming from A/C expansion valve. Customer came and verified noise with tech. Evacuate and recharge A/C system checked operation noise gone."
Since they misdiagnosed the first time and made me pay for a belt change, they said they picked up the parts on this one and made me pay labor of $134.25. Does that sound about right?

Glassjaw, I am looking at the repair order and you are right, it wasnt the evaporator. Here's the exact text:

Called back and spoke to the service manager. Turns out they didnt replace anything, just evacuate and recharge with 2lbs of freeons. So he apologized and refunded what they charged me for the belt + labor (their initial diagnosis for the hissing noise). Thanks glassjaw, you just got me some money back.
