Different Sounds

Well today I decided to pop out my rear-right wheel and check out the rubbing sound/bumpiness it was making. Well early in the morning today while at the parking lot, I let the car coast and felt slight bumps with the sound happening at each cycle. So a lil earlier a friend sprayed it with some sort of cleaner/oily stuff. The bump is still there... but now the sound turned into a squeaky sound like rubber was being rubbed. I hope it's nothing bad... any ideas guys? Thanks.

PS. How do I adjust my headlights... when I turn them on, they both turn on of course... but when I'm driving it's like only my right side is working. Hmmm.. I'm not really worried about the lights anyways. That doesn't even matter. I'm just worried about the squeaky sound.

Are your wheels all properly balanced?

Headlight adjustment is in the owners manual

Balanced as in aligned? No... The car SLIGHTLY pulls to the left. I didn't know slight off-balance would produce rubbery sounds.

No, balanced as in balanced with weights so they don't vibrate while they turn. If you're looking for a driveline noise you need to isolate the easiest or most obvious things and then go from there. Out of the whole driveline, the wheel balance is the first thing anyone would look at regarding a noise since they're on the "front lines" of the suspension.

Any particular reason you haven't taken the car to a mechanic to be checked out since you're having all these issues?

Mine did that because I have really soft Yoko's. Tire had flat spots just from sitting overnight due to weight of car. It would thump until it worked itself out thru the day. I increased air pressure to 41 and no more thumps.

Hearing noise from just a coast I suspect somethine else is rubbing. Are all your wheel bolts the same length? Parking brake fully released?

What size wheels do you have?

You could possibly have flat spots on tires. My Yoko's would flatten out over night due to weight of car. It would thump fairly loud until it worked itself out thru the day. I increased air pressure to 41 and no more thumps.

I haven't taken the car to a mechanic because I live in the "ghetto" (East LA) and all the mechanics here don't have any idea about Mercedes. Plus if they do, they charge OUTRAGEOUS prices. I just want a mechanic who is honest and good priced. I heard about a place up near Beverly Hills called "Westwood Mercedes"... some guy named Larry owns the place and I heard good things, so this weekend I plan on taking it there, hopefully.

I hear the sound under all circumstances... while accelerating, coasting, and braking. All bolts are same length and the parking brake is fully released.

The tire sizes in the rear are 245/45 R18... and they are Bridgestone Potenza's.

Thanks everybody!

Stock rear size should be 275/35/18..... so your measurement is way off.... even the front is 245/40/18.

Dude, w/ all the problems you're having, you'd better check not only to a mechanic but also a body shop.... you may hear something you don't want to hear - your car was wrecked before. I hope I'm wrong... but w/ front headlights out of focus, grinding noises that you complaint, rough idle, etc. do give me a chill....

If there are too many problems, I'd suggest you sell the car ASAP.... AMG is not cheap to fix.

I don't really know anymore... I was expecting a really good car. But I guess the car is just not for me. Way too many problems. I wish you were wrong about my car being wrecked. According to my buddy... when I opened the spare wheel area... there is this tan-colored clayish stuff. He says it's "Bondo" which means the car was wrecked. Blah. I don't feel good. I think I'll just go shower and sleep now, I have a headache.

That's not bondo that's the factory seam sealer. Between your buddy's and your inexperience with cars I would 100% recommend taking the car to a dealer for an inspection which may cost a couple hundred but they will identify everything that needs servicing. Then you can decide if you want to tackle these projects yourself or have them or another shop take care of it.

I didn't know Mercedes made a car with paste rubbed un-evenly in the corners of the spare wheel well... Well I guess that's Benz quality for you since your saying it's normal.
