Strange Check engine/SRS light problem

My CEL randomly came on the other day and I had the codes read.. It had thrown 3 separate codes:

Fuel Trim Bank 1
Fuel Trim Bank 2
and Transmission Control Electric

The car sat for less than a hour and when I started it back up... no CEL.

The same thing has happened again, with the light coming on for a few hours and then is off when I restart the car.

In addition, each time this happens my red SRS light comes on and sometimes stays on, and other times will flash on and of randomly.

I did some searching for the CEL codes and found that some people have this type of problem when their battery is close to dead... They say before buying a new MAF or cleaning the current one (to fix the fuel trim light) that I should try replacing the battery. The people who had the issue had the factory battery and most were 6-7 years old.


The car feels perfect and doesn't feel any different when the lights come on..


Any thoughts? ideas?

You can monitor batt volt from the CCU while driving. Not as acurate as a meter but sometimes helpful.

Press and hold rest for 5 secs, use right auto button and toggle to screen 24. Press rest or turn key off to exit.

Should read +13v.

That meant nothing to me...

Im pretty new to this car so specifics would be awesome..

all i managed to do was reset my trip odometer

it read 13.3 - 13.5.. normal.

so that doesnt explain why I'm randomly getting these lights...

Your codes were PO 170, 172 and 715, right?

I'd ignore the 715 trans code, absent shifting issues.

PO170/172 are fuel trim and are set by rich/lean conditions or "perceived" conditions. The air side of things CAN be a dirty air cleaner, the MAF and/or O2 Sensors.

Am not conversant with gassers fuel metering as am more into diesel and injection pumps.

A MB laptop with SDS could look at fuel trim and live adaptation values and determine what device is no longer able to adjust sufficiently to bring trim into spec.

The fact the CEL goes off tells you it is an intermittent problem that makes this more difficult to resolve.

^yeah those were the codes.. thanks so much for your help! I'm going to try cleaning the MAF instead of paying the $390 for a new one and see if that fixes the issue.
