E55 AMG
Hi

Hello, i am new to the forum.

We are about to re-buy an E55 AMG 1998 with 100,000 miles, are there any things i should be worried about, also, if i were to want to obtain arround 400bhp, would this be too much for the engine, its been well looked after and serviced regulary but the last owner used to "standing burnout" it alot, would this have damaged anytihng?

Thanks - Joe

P.s. Im off to work now, Ill have to reply after 6pm

Hi, just to let everyone know, i would like to be taken seriously as i devote my life to cars and am learning at a very fast rate. Often at my college tutors ask me to go and show other students how to do the task at hand.

Thanks - Joe

First move - get the tranny "flushed" .Second - change out your plugs ,fuel filter etc.If doesn't have them..get a set of K&N's.I would expect the time would be coming soon for O2 sensors and probably a mass air sensor. It sounds like alot, but if I were buying the car,I would do all the above so I know where I stand.Troubleshooting will be alot easier if you tackle these now.As for the horsepower,I believe you are pushing about 369 at the crank, for 30 more ponies I would try a set of headers (Kleeman), but be prepared, they aren't cheap.Welcome to the forum and post some pics!

Heed his advice... good recommendations here! I assure you'll be happy as long as it's maintained properly. On that note start with routine and preventive maintenance first before the modifications. Good luck!

Hi, Thanks for the advice

I have made a list of precautionary first jobs:

Oil and filter change
Plugs
Engine diagnostic machine to test for fault codes or any underlying problems (They have one at college i can use)

Also taking into consideration your advice:

Auto gearbox flush
Fuel filter and
02 sensor

The Air flow sensor might have to wait as I have a feeling it might be more than i can offord, I am paying for the mods I do to the car just to help my dad out

Thanks - Joe

Do our cars push 369 at the crank? I thought they were rated at 355, but I know MB likes to play down HP figures on certain cars.

Also I was on the AMG website and I read that that they have the 0-60moh time as 5.7 seconds vs. the 5 flat I always thought. Any know the correct 0-60 times or have drag slips?

I have seen 349 hp and 355 hp in different sites & periodicals, but you are on the right track regarding conservative spec figures by MB.

As for the 0-60mph times, obviously it varies and depends on many factors/conditions but I have seen a best of 0-60 mph at 4.8 secs as well as 13.3 secs in the 1/4 mile (published).
Wikipedia W210 E55 has it at: General Consensus 0-60 mph at 5.4 sec, and 0-100 km/h at 5.4 sec AMG figure (1999).
Autozine published its 0-60 mph at 5.3 seconds.
And last but not least, Fantasy Cars has it at 4.8 secs for 0-60 mph.
My personal analysis is that a good running well-maintained stock W210 E55 should estimatedly do a 0-60 mph in the low-mid 5-sec range. Still pretty darn quick for the current era.

You may want to rethink the K and N filters. Oil eventually finds its way onto the cross hairs in the maf and will foul it up eventually killing it. The original OEM filter fed more than sufficient air for the motor to breath. Just a thought from one who has seen it happen. I have flow tested both OEM and K and N and CF/m is very close and both flow more than what the motor demands at WOT. Oil changes for motor, tranny and rear axle are important, plugs good for 100k mi. Congrats on your purchase. Enjoy it.
