Funny Noise

Hey guys i have been viewing for a few weeks now. I have just recently purchased a 2000 E55 210. I have just started, or just noticed. I have a noise underneath the passanger back seat. It is directly under the door side corner. It sounds like a servo or something trying to actuate over and over. Short bursts of a second each about 3 seconds apart. Does anyone know what it could possibly be?

By the way these cars are sick and VERY addicting.

Thanks in advance for any help.

listen to your trunk... my car every once in while does that same thing, but also makes a 20 second long humming noise but then stops after like 10 minutes.

Greg thanks for the Reply. It is definately directly under the rear seat Passenger side. And it sound like something trying to actuate. I have an appointment with a service tech on Wednesday the 26th. I am fairly mechanical just did not want to start pulling the back seat out not knowing where to start. I took the trim mold off of the door seal and can hear it even better. I was hoping a tech might know what it was.

Also so all the information is out in the open. I had a XM satelight radio taken out of the car. When i pulled the door seal molding off that is where ALL the, Aftermarket, Stereo wires are running back to the amps in the trunk. I think maybe that when the stereo shop was pulling the wire out for the XM they might have jared something loose. I cannot get my hand far enough into the area to feel where the noise is coming from.

I just hate to spend 2 hours of money in the shop for something stupid. Does anyone know of any servos or actuators in that general area?

Andy, you know the Battery is under the rear seat passenger side, getting access to it is real easy, just remove the rear seat cushion and it is right there under the seat...if there was a custom stereo installed it could be a relay of some sort ...and as you said no need to spend the money on something that might be very simple. To my knowledge there is nothing OEM there that tries to actuate...the only thing I remember is that when the seat is removed you can hear the fuel pump, but thats more of a wirring sound and constant, there is also the vaccum lines for the door lock actuators, I dont remember a relay though..good luck, let us know.

Thanks Max Werks. It actually could be a vacume line. Or the battery. It is DEFINATELY inside the car. I assume the fule pump is on the outside of the car.

Max how do i get the back seat cushion out. Is there a trick?

Thanks again

There are two levers ( Black color if I remember ) on the bottom edge of the rear seat cushions, on on either side of the car toward the rear doors, you click them up and they release and then you just pull or lift the entire seat cushion straight up. Yes the fuel pump is outside the car , under the same location you describe. Regards,
Max

There is a pneumatic pump under the seat next to the battery encased in foam. It controls door locks and your multicontour seats.

Nick it is definately the pump making the noise. I have searched for leaks with no luck. All the door locks work. I will check the seats tonight. Does anyone know how much a new pump would be if i have to replace it? Also any other suggestions would be appreciated. I have an appointment with Service tech Wednesday. ALL door locks work including the trunk and gas filler locks. I did not realize the same pump worked the seats. Will check and report back tommorow.

Thanks again for all the help...

Andy, my 2001 E55 does the same thing since I purchased it a few years ago. There was talk about it last year in here and it seems to be in the front passenger seat back. Also some times the power door locks will cycle and stop I understand this is normal for these Mercedes to do. I have had no problems but the sounds make one think what is not working properly. I got used to it and forget about it every time I hear it.

Check this link out for fixing things that don’t want to work anymore on our cars. http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w210...1-09-08-a.html

Dawson, Thank You for your reply. Does your pump continuously run. Mine as soon as you turn the key on, starts running a cycle. Continues as long as the key is on. I am going to go ahead and take it in tommorow to see if it is anything that needs to be replaced. I trust the guy looking at it, i just do not want to spend a bunch of money trying to track the problem down. Atleast now i know where the problem is, where as before everyones help. It was just a noise under the seat.

Thanks for everyones help.

I had the pump looked at. It was the passenger side lumbar leaking. Thank everyone for their help.
