Winter Wheel/Tire Set-up

Wondering what you all have as your winter set-ups? Also, does the W211 AMG wheels fit on a W210 AMG without issue?

I run 17 inch E430 rims with Dunlop snows, I recommend those(reasonably priced) or what I run on my wifes car, 17 inch AMGs on her CLK with Blizzaks(more $).

Mercedes Benz E 55 AMG T
just bought Nokian Hakka R 225/45 - 17
reeal good tires, much smoother then summertires and yet a grip like no other winter tire Ive run, in the manual it says 235/45 -17 but i think the grip is better with 225/45 -17,

I went with 18x8 Sport Edition five stars with 245-40-18 Pirelli Sottozero's. Once I get them on (and get my car) I will post some pictures.

I went with 235/45-17 Blizzaks, second winter with them and they've been great for me.. Also bought some knock-off AMG 17 inch rims.

Before I moved to Florida, I was in NYC and upstate NY. I loved two tires for the snow, the Blizzacs and the Michelin Ice and snow, both came in 17s , and in great variety of widths, I had carlssons 17s staggered and they worked like a charm in the worst upstate NY Blizzards...mainly were on the W124, and W210 Wagons, but the E55 got to play in the snow few times. Just remember to flip the Tranny switch to the 2nd gear start position.

bgerm3:

I'm in the process of obtaining a W210 E55 AMG, and winter wheels / tires are a concern for me, up here in Western Canada.

I want some AMG knock offs - 225/45x17" Ft and a 235/40x17" Rr, then I will mount Nokian Hakka All season tires. Do I need wheel offset correction spacers, and if so, what dimensions?

Thanks

If I were you, I would just stick with 235/45-17s all the way around. That way you can rotate them if you are into that type of thing.

For my winter set up I went with the sizing recommended in the owners manual (17x7-1/2 ET35). So no need for spacers etc. Also had to buy a shorter set of bolts, I forget the size of those.

Here's a pic..

Western Canada! Assuming you have a hill or two around, you may find it challenging at times.

I have a W210 e55 - monoblock rims - install Blizzaks for the winter - rotate to my ContiSports for the warmer months. Can NOT get up the hills in southwest Connecticut to save my life, even with the Blizzaks, with more than an inch of snow on the ground.

Bought a Jeep for the snow after I found myself unable to get home in a 6" storm.

If you live in town and it is flat, you ought to be fine. I found flat roads were very easy to navigate with the E55+Blizzaks - just nothing with a slope to it. Biggest issue were other drivers without a clue.....

Yup, the 55 is not much of a snow car, I was unable to get home quite a few times this past winter. Next winter: Range Rover or Florida

I live at the top of a big hill. They do plow it frequently, but all our other cars have been OK with proper winter tires. Of course, they were FWD. This was a really bad year, and my wife only had to park and walk once.

It the strong torque the problem with the AMG? Would sand bags in the trunk help?

Sand bags probably would help a bit, but I can't imagine how much would be needed and how that would affect the drivability (and stoppability) of the car anywhere other than driving up the big hill.....

Big torque + rear wheel drive + big hill = not a great combination.
