Hello all, new to this forum
Hello all,
Just purchased a 2000 E55 with 28,000 mi. Been lurking for a while, but I finally got to drive what I have been reading from you guys. I must say that it is a very impressive car. I have one question about the car's engine that is bothering me. Are all AMG engine this noisy at idle? When the car is idling there's this tapping noise. It almost sounds like a diesel engine. I would appreciate if someone could comment on this. Thanks.

A 2000 with 28000 miles? Don't people drive their cars? My '02 is about to hit 25,000 miles.
There's something wrong with your engine; my bet is a bad valve lifter. Simple warranty item. Get it in to the dealer ASAP.
BTDT at about 10,000 miles. The dealership replaced my bad lifters with another set, which went bad before I got home. Now I've got 15,000 miles on the new set, with no problems.

Surprisely, I have had two people (both had no idea what an E55 is) ask if my car is a diesel! I just tell them, Hell No, that is just that big azz 5.5 liter engine waiting to be unleased! I tell them this is the largest V8 Mercedes makes.
Knock on wood - mine does not make the tapping noise.

My 2002 has not cracked 3000 miles on the odometer yet. Really crappy weather here, especially this winter.

Have it checked out.. Utilize your factory warantee. I still have 2 months on mine. I have a 99' E55 with 25,000 miles.
