Out with the old, In with the new.

Here are the pictures from the deer that ran into me at about 60 or so mph. I barely clipped him and remember his head smacking the windshield sorta. Here are the pics and my replacement for the E55, which was a great car and definitely not my last AMG.

and a few more pics. The last are 3/4ths of my service receipts, because somehow, someway I did manage to spend roughly 20,000$ on maintenance in the 65ish thousand miles I had the car.

Nice E39 M5! Are you in BMWCCA? Going to chapterfest?

Shame about your E55. Good luck with your new car...

Sorry to hear about the E55. However, you chose a very competent replacement. For us, it was either the M or the E55. We went with the M because it's a little more sporty and more engaging to drive than the 55 with the 6 speed stick. My wife drives the M but prefers an automatic in traffic. Bottom line, they are BOTH great cars but each offers something different. btw, when did you pick up the M? If you are looking for M5 resources, try M5board.com.

Sorry to hear Greg.

What are you going to do with the E55 now? Get it fixed or sell or what?

I don't know how to reply with multiple quotes so i'm just putting the names of what I'm replying too. How do you reply to multiple posts???

KLDC2 - I'm not in BMWCCA, I've never considered it but i'm going to look into it. Whats chapterfest?

PinoyK20 - The M5 is much more involving, It feels when I turn into a turn that its diving into the turn while the E55 felt more relaxed and heavier. It felt lazier. The M5 being manual also makes it a bit more fun. BUT! The E55 does do things that the M5 can't. I'm not sure what but since driving the M5 since last night (i've already put 300 miles on it) I feel somethings missing that I had the E55. I'll let you know what it is once I know!

Dragoncoach - I agree with you, both are GREAT cars. I definitely am going to miss the E55, I almost feel like I've betrayed it.... but yes I'm on M5board, I haven't introduced myself but have been lurking for sometime as I knew my next car would most likely have to be the M5. I picked up the M last night.

pinoyk20(2nd post) - I don't know yet, I haven't opened up the M5 fully through all the gears, I'm still trying to remember how to drive manual. But I can tell you I spin first from 3,500 rpms up to the 7000 limit and chrip 2nd usually. Then up top it pulls very hard, I feel like it pulls harder because of the extra horsepower. Again, once i know i'll tell you. I'm also going to make a few videos of driving and acceleration so you may be able to compare. but I'd like to say it's faster but that may be because it's manual and manual always feels faster to me.

JamE55 - It's unforunate, it's nice to get a new car but I really wish that deer would of thought about what it was doing when it jumped in front, hit me and poop on my door. I'm selling the E55, 5,000$ and it could be yours! I feel thats how much I would get if I were to sit and part it, like the doors that are good, the trunk, the interior, the shocks and springs and so on....

Sorry about your E55, but like everyone else stated, you'll have fun with the M5. Out of curiosity, how did you spend $20K on maintenance in just 65K miles??? Is that normal, or did your car have particular issues?

I am having fun with the M5! it's great to be in a manual car again, although the kickdown switch never got old for me.

Off the top of my head i had done to my car,
3 sets of tires, 1 waterpump, 1 alternator, 2 sets of brakes all around, shocks and springs with camber arms and camber bolts and many many alignments, probably about 20 oil changes, 1 pedal accel sensor, 2 front control arms, Service A twice, Service B once, Spark plugs once, Valve cover gasket twice for both sides, trans connector seal, 2 MAFs, cam sensor, crank sensor, diff gasket and fluid, tranny gasket and filter and fluid, ball joints, wheel bearings all around, 1 upper radiator hose, 2 O2 sensors and it goes on....

Thats all i could think of.

I think most of that is normal, some of the work probably didn't need to be done but oh well. It was totally worth it, it would even be worth it to me to fix it but being only 20 my insurance would just be too much to have both these cars on it.

Also a lot of the work was done at the dealership, oddly they typically had better prices then local shops and with the dealer I never had to go back, at the local shops i had too for a few things when I didn't go to the dealer first.

I'm waiting to try to sell the car as a whole as parting is PITA but if in a week or so nobody bites, then i'll start parting out the car.

M PoWeR ! Go Greg... I'm sure you won't miss the E55 too much considering this is it's direct competitor!

How does the M compare in terms of build quality (squeaks, rattles, noise, flaws you can see)?

I noticed that the E39 M5 goes for almost twice the cost of a comparable W210 E55. Is it worth it?

Having driven a Dinan E39 M5 and owned a modded W210 E55. Both are phenomenal cars in their own way and its tough to compare them. But I agree with greg, there is some "special factor" on the W210 E55 that not many cars have. With that said... from a simplistic standpoint here is the best way to describe it:

E39 M5 = HP
W210 E55 = TQ

The W210 definitely throws you back in your seat more, but its reaction time is a bit more lethargic and "lazier" as expressed simply because its designed for more comfort than sportiness.

Congrats on your purchase greg.

Same, BMW was great back in the day (E39 M5 and E46 M3 being the last of their good looking cars). Their new styling is so bad I may never get another BMW again... sad coming from a once M3 diehard. BMW has lost their way and may never find it again.

the license plate on the 2nd one is pretty hilarious haha. I'm surprised at how good the 14815 Magnaflows sound on the M5, that's a heck of a budget exhaust for the M5.

I know this has been discussed before, but does anyone have a clip of a magnaflow on our cars?

Not as good as on the bmws, our exhausts systems are totally different and also you don't want to run magnaflows on autos since autos drone more. Furthermore, AMG makes the best mufflers from the factory so the stock muffler never needs upgrading. The only think you really need to mod is the front half of the exhaust system (headers, cats, x-pipe).

Hope that helps.

I would be interested in that too. Even though I know people say the AMG is the best free flow exhaust and you won't pick up any horsepower. I knew this on my CLK430 too, but the Eisenmann I had on there sounded so amazing on there I didn't care about HP.

Also Saintz said something about the cost difference. I noticed this too as I was also looking at M5's vs. E55's. In the end you can just get a nicer E55 for the money. Well, plus my wife wanted to be able to drive it on the rare occasion she would need to and she can't drive stick.

Actually, Non AMG cars you can pick up power by doing cat back, so you probably did make some power on your CLK430... but on an AMG the catback is the biggest waste of money of any mod, it does nothing other than sound, and even then its not nearly as good as keeping stock muffler & modding the front half of the exhaust system.

The E55 is a better daily than the M5 for a few reasons, so you made the right choice.
