Total Loss?

I got a call yesterday that my wife got rear ended in the E55. She was in the car with our 2 kids and a friend of our son. They were all in their kid seats and noone got hurt thank God.

The damage from what i could see is that the back bumper came off and dented/scratched, also the rear quater panel by the light was pushed in. Thats all i can see from a cell phone pic she took. She did say the car doesn't drive straight though.

What are the chances the insurance company will consider it a total loss?

if there is frame damage, probably very high since the cars value is not that high these days (especially for a 99). The good news is you can always get 2001-2002 one for a great price which has all the new features the 99s didn't have.

I try to see the positive in all things and like you say AMS, i would be able to get the updatd version if it is declared total loss.

I'll miss the car but all i cared about was that the wife and kids were not harmed

Kevc43, pm'd you

A rear end hit like you are speaking of will probably be on the order of 8 grand which would total the car. The damage will be inside to the frame. These are not separate frame built cars so the expense is in replacing the frame which means alot of cutting away to get the damaged frame rail out and replaced. I went through this with a 30 mph hit to the back square on while I was stopped. My E430 drove straight though and the outside damage looked minimal. The frame did its job of absorbing the hit and deformed and that is where the cost will kill it. Best of luck and go for new.

Thanks guys.

I got home yesterday and it doesn't look that bad. The rear passenger panel was pushed in, the light is fine, it pushed in the trunk as well, broke the latch that is attached to the chassis to lock the trunk. The bumper is shot as well as the trim pieces. There's a stress crack on the rear panel by the wheel well.

I didn't get a chance to look underneath the car yet though. The exhaust looks ok, sounds ok.

I don't know, any thoughts of what it will cost to fix the things mentioned above?

I'm sure it's going to need to be aligned as well

There is absolutely no way for any of us to estimate a cost. Please just take it to a body shop or your insurance adjuster and let them look at it.

if the damage to repair is worth more than 10k then the car will be declared a loss (since that's about what most 99s go for). It would be much better to have the car totaled and get a 2001-2002 then try and have them repair it... in fact beg for them to total it lol.

Good luck either way

Well you have the other cars information right? First you file a claim... then you have the car inspected by an insurance adjuster. If they let you take it to the body shop of your choice (or from a list), take it somewhere you know is expensive. They'll add up all the costs plus labor of restoring your car, inspect for frame damage, and give you an estimate. If that estimate is for more than their determined market value for the car before the accident, there you go, totaled.

They take the car, you get the money, and you're out shopping for another car. If they don't total it, you get to wait for repairs. Depending on your/other persons coverage, you may or may not get a rental/loaner.

Good luck, keep us updated.

Claim has been done, adjuster said he'd come by tuesday or Weds.

I guess after he's done I'll take it to a MB dealer, they are the most expensive place that i can think of, lol

I'll keep you guys posted.

Dealership is a great idea, can't get more expensive than them. Sometimes if you try the insurance company will just give you a check for the total amount to apply to another car, usually if its over 80% of total vehicle value then there is some wiggle room to consider it totaled. If its over 100% then they will total it no matter what. Being a 99 that's a good thing b/c book value on them has collapsed, and if you argue with them that real street prices of a 99 are even lower than book you may be able to convince them of your case.

Don't forget to tell them you want all OEM parts and to make sure they are getting AMG parts and not just general W210 or general E-class parts. And if there is fender damage, make sure they put in the cost of rolling the fender/s.

Sorry to hear, but the car did its job protecting the occupants. I know its comparing apples to oranges, but last October I was rear ended on the freeway. I had a 97 C36. I was stopped and the person who hit me was travelling at 25-30mph. Damage on my car was a little more than yours as I was pushed into vehicle in front and airbags deployed. Needless to say, car was totalled. Estimate for repair was $16k. See pics in thread. Sorry as they are cel phone pics. I now drive a 98 C43.

Mine is not as bad as yours plus your airbags where deployed.

I'll try to upload some pics soon.

I'm sure he's aware, but was just trying to give you a baseline comparison. You were asking for estimates right?

Well, it looks like it's going to be bad news. The adjuster is here and he told me the person who hit me only has a $5,000 liability max. He said anything above that I would have to go through a small claims court and get it through them.

He is writing up the estimate now but he said it looks like it'll be in that ball park.

Is that how it usually works?
