Cruise control spontaneously switches off
Hello fellow W210 enthusiasts; we are all very fortunate to have such a nice car . . . .
The cruise control on my '99 E55 started acting unpredictably just after I had new tires put on in early January '10 (it is unlikely that the situations correlate?) The ongoing problem is that the cruise control, when activated, will switch off in about 30 seconds with no mechanical adjustments to the braking or accelerator.
My local MB repair shop replaced the battery and corrected computer faults last week . . . but the problem persists.
Any ideas as to what might be going on?
Thanks for your valued expertise.
M

What size are the tyres front and rear?
Having different rotating diameters will cause the cruise control to stop working without throwing fault codes. A large rolling diameter difference will throw a code and bring the ESP light on.

The tires were changed from Michelins to Continentals with no change in front/rear radii from 18".
BTW, the cruise is often triggered off by going down a slight incline . . . .
Any further ideas?
Thanks for the mental effort and experience.

Are you still using the std 235/40/18 and 265/35/18 sizes? or are you using a wider 245/40/18 on the front? Which tyres did you replace?

Check your brake switch that could be casuing your problem too.

The tires are Continental Extrem Contacts with 225/40/18" front and 275/35/18" rear.
I will look at the fuse issue, and get back to you guys when the problem is found.
Thanks for the tips . . . the brake switch could more remotely be the issue, but no associated idiot lights are indicating this involvement (per other posts in this vein).

That will be your problem. the tyres have too great a rolling diameter difference. If you had 235/40 or 245/40 fronts you wouldn't have a problem.
Why have you used a smaller than standard front tyre anyway?

Your response about the smaller tyre appears to be correct. I did not check the thickness of the tyres after their installation (assuming them to be correct). It appears as though the installer ordered a different tyre size from my specification (which I'm obviously pretty upset about at this moment) . . . .
Thanks for your wisdom.
