You really need to have an X-Pipe in place to produce some back pressure. Just taking the resonator off doesn't do much. Any muffler shop should be able to do it. You don't need a kit.

Why is it that everyone is throwing 'loosing back pressure' left and right? Does anyone actually know what, if anything, it will do when you reduce back pressure?

That's not entirely true ... X-pipe does not produce back pressure (in fact it does quite the opposite).

The X-pipe improves scavenging effects thereby helping the cylinders empty faster between pulses (especially at the part throttle at low rpms & WOT at high rpms, It doesn't do that much in the mid range). In overly simplistic terms, think of the X-pipe as a vacuum cleaner that sucks any leftover gasses out.

It is not mandatory or necessary ... but it most certainly helps, especially in applications where there is not crossover on the stock system (such as the W210 E55 AMG).

Hope that helps.

If an X pipe is installed in the right place and the exhaust is setup correctly, it will improve scavenging. Each exhaust pulse heads out of the head and into the exhaust. Each is a pressure wave and has mass and inertia. As it moves past any given point it creates negative pressure behind it. The best is to have these pulses evenly spaced when they join up. To do this all exhaust tubes from each starting point must either be the same length or tuned with differing diameters to ensure the pulses are properly spaced when they merge. An x-pipe ties all eight cylinders together at the X. Location is critical, too long or short on one side and the pulses could collide creating more backpressure. Properly done, an x-pipe, or any merge type pipe for that matter, provides the best exhaust function as well as a sweet, synchronous sound out the back if the rest of the exhaust is symmetrical as well.

General rule of thumb, the closer the x-pipe is to the headers the better. If you put the x-pipe in front of the secondaries you will get even more gains (its just a bit harder to package it that way.)

For maximum gains and emissions reductions do high flow primaries, x-pipe as soon as the two pipes come close to each other, the secondaries after the X. You can remove resonator of course as well

Nobody, there simply is not enough room for a true set of equal length shorties. But Obviously we have the performance bolt-on shorties for those looking to keep OEM bolt locations and want no welding required.

OEM locations and bolt up are a huge plus!

old thread. The link above looks like not found now. Anyone else have the pictures above of a proper setup and where to buy from eBay to put it together?

also, how challenging are the shorty Header installs? Is it worth it in comjuction with a full exhaust above (true x, secondary car delete and res delete), but leaving primaries? Trying to reduce labor and. How have to drop the motor.
