Thinking about a W210 E55
My Very First Post!
My father has had a 1996 E420 for a number of years and we both love his car. But I have always wanted something with a little more oomph. So I thought a W210 E55 would fit the bill and I wouldn't mind spending some money to keep her running.
So I have found a 2002 with 87,xxx miles on it for $15,900. It is located in Kansas City, MO, but the owner recently moved there from California so it hasn't been in winter weather that much.
So I just wanted to see what your thoughts were as far as price/mileage, and if any of you know of a good independent shop that could do a Pre purchase inspection on it for me, since I would have to fly to Kansas City, MO and drive her back to Atlanta. I bought my S2000 CR this way but it only had 3800 miles on it so I didn't think a PPI was needed, and it wasn't. But... an 8 year old car with that many miles that isn't cheap to fix, I figure I should definitely get it checked out before I buy a one way ticket.
I have had German cars before an '87 420 Sel, a '00 S4, an '01.5 Passat 1.8T, and an '01 M3. I have been racing Hondas for a number of years but for a daily/highway car I am thinking about a nice W210 E55 as it is more luxury than some other German offerings and it would be special enough to me that I wouldn't get bored of it.
Hope all is well,
Matt

I thought that was a touch high as well. I was thinking like $13 tops if there is absolutely not one thing that needs attention. But even that seems a touch high to me for an E55 with over 80K miles... But I have only just started looking.

I think 13k would be relatively affordable if the car is in great shape and has no immediate needs. Wear and tear items are acceptable if less than 100 percent, but don't buy the car even at that price if it will need brakes or tires in the first 6 months. Brakes alone can run $1200 plus with labor, and tires will run about $1k for a full set. Definitely not items you want to buy in the first 6 months of ownership.
When you have the PPI done, make sure they go in and look at the front brake pads.
All aside, I think $13k is a middle of the road price for that car. One heck of a bargain as far as performance per dollar as long as no major issues arise.

I'm selling mine and I'm within a few hours of you. Mine has more miles but is decked out, needs nothing, and is way cheaper. I actually bought it in ATL. You can fly 45 minutes for $200 on Delta, pick it up, and drive it home in 5 hours.

Let me know if you want to make a deal. The 6+ grand you save will more than make up for any mileage. You could replace the whole transmission for that much.

I should also say that it looks like I'll be leaving your guys soon. I just bought a CL600 V12 biturbo. On paper it is way faster, but the W210 E55 is in real life one of the fastest cars I've ever stomped the go pedal on. Over 400 lbs ft of naturally aspirated torque is like crack, and I'm used to heavily built AWD race cars, so I'm impressed.

I feel like the E55 is worth the extra pennies. My last car was a vw gti 1.8t, it was a quick car but really didn't have potential.
Now that I bought the E55, I feel like a Rick Ross boss. lol. But it's true though, even though the price of the cars dropped, repairs haven't.

It looks like I've got a buyer for my E55.
$15k is pretty high. I would shoot for $11k to $13k with that type of mileage. Lower end of the range for a private car, higher end for dealer car. Check Craigslist, eBay, and Autotrader. Check Craigslist for major cities near you (ATL, Charlotte, Raleigh are good bets). Don't be afraid to pass if the car isn't right or the right price.
Also, I think Cneedham810 still has his for sale. It's loaded with bluetooth and the rare vented seats. You could try PM'ing him: https://mbworld.org/forums/members/3...eedham810.html
