1999 E55 AMG
I have a 99 E55 AMG and today I was pulling out of a parkinglot with the traction control turned off and as I gunned it to get out of the parking lot (not very hard though) it took off and before it went into the next gear I let off the gas and the car made a sound like a jack brake on a truck (like a loud rush of air is all I can think of). Ran fine after but when I got to where I was going and I was sitting at idle I heard a knock in the engine....... Did I just kill my car??? The knock isn't too bad and I don't know if its a rod knock or something else.. you can only hear it at idle and as the rpm's are coming down after revving.... Sorry, didn;t mean to hijack your thread.. Anyone ever have this problem or maybe have an idea as to what happened?

Get the 2.5" pipes with the x-pipe in place of the 2nd cat. Also, get a pair of mandrel bands pipes in place of the resonator and your car will love you for that!! As far as high flow cats, i have not replace mine but if you google the net, you should find a few that would fit in that space.
OEM pipes are 2.33" hence will mate nicely with the 2.5".

Possibly
It sounds like a problem that I recently came across..Have your shop check the EGR valve. That can cause a lot of similar symptoms. I remember being at a red light, thinking that a earthquake hit when mine got stuck open.
