Clunking sound under accel/decel

Before I jack up the car, put on my grubbies, and just start poking around, I thought I would defer to the wisdom and experience here first as I have in the past.
Thanks!

I think you might be on the right track with the rubber bushings in the rear suspension. What about the rubber donuts on each end of the drive shaft. Not sure if these could make that kind of noise?. Could also be a motor or trans mount if they are worn bad enough. I see some of the spare parts sellers list new mounts for the rear subrame also, I guess they sell them for a reason.
I for one would be interested to know what you found the problem to be.

Well, rather than jack 'er up and poke around I did what any MBWorld member would do. I posted here and then went out and washed my ride. Actually, I didn't have that much time and I had a pinched nerve in my back from carrying my napping 3 yo around at the local car show the week before.
The backs getting better so I will be checking it out this weekend and will let you know what I find.

I did the "one foot on the brake and one on the gas" test at idle and the motor jumped up a couple of inches.
This was an easy replacement job on my 300E. Anyone have input about this job on the 55? Part brand? I plan on doing the tranny mount too.
Engine mounts you can find a DIY on here.
I took the parts to an independent and paid maybe $200 total for install. If you DIY, stay safe. If a jack goes out you can drop the block on your hand.

I started with the driver's side which turned out to be the harder of the two due to the steering box. A no-offset 16mm wrench is a must for the top bolt. It took about 45 minutes start to finish inuding the learning curve having never done this on the 55. Tranny mount took all of five minutes thanks to the geninus at MB who had the forethought that one day the mount would be replaced.
Almost hard to tell the engine is running at idle now.
