Just got a 2000 e55 amg!!!

Hey just a few questions maybe someone could help me with, so to start with I need to get my comand unit rebuilt (cd stuck :/), and the speedo rebuilt (bulbs out and pixels starting to fade). Now when I used the correct keys to remove the comand unit the keys didnt click into place as they should've! I've tried them both ways many times, any suggestions??? and who to send them to?? how about http://www.clusterrepairsuk.co.uk they seem pretty legit but i'd like to see someone here who has had it done by them.

Thanks

Nick

Take a picture of your cluster... and does the CD move at all when you hit eject?

Use the keys to remove the climate control first. Comand unit requires removal of ashtray, then you will see the screws to remove the whole wood panel. Unplug the switches on the wood panel, then remove. Then you'll see the screws that hold the comand onto the dash.

The unit may be screwed down to the inner frame. Remove your climate control unit and take a peek if it is.

I attached some pictures of both the speedo, which as you can see a lot of bulbs are out an the pixels in the main display are getting faded on the left side. I can deal with the fading if the bulbs are really easy to change out, I just figured while I have it out and the nav out to get rebuilt why not just fix the whole unit cause it also has the sticky speedometer needle :/ (ignore the temperature, i need a new ambient temp sensor), and the nav unit it displays that error message whenever the car is on, what ive heard is that sometimes the fuses on the back go bad when the battery dies and then gets jumped? so ill have to wait till I get the special tools...

Welcome!
I wouldn't worry about that fading. It actually looks really good considering what I've seen around. Get the tools, insert them at 9 and 3 o'clock, turn them counterclockwise until they catch, pull the speedo out, disconnect the electrical connector and replace bulbs.

the bulbs are pretty easy to take care of. The comand will need replacement or rebuilt. why does your outside temp read -36? check to see if the sensor behind the front bumper is plugged in or missing.

I wish my displays looked that good. The temp and clock on mine are damn near unreadable.

Where exactly is this temperature sensor? I know autohausaz.com sells it for around $20 so I wasn't too concerned.

It's in the front bumper grille. You will see it sticking out just a tiny bit. It's all black plastic-rubber,looks like a pencil tip.
I'm sure you can get the bulbs in a lot of places, like EBay and parts store. I would get them from the dealer...how much can they charge for a tiny bulb...

Give Rocco's Auto Tech a try for the Comand repair. They are in California I believe.

P0455 means a LARGE vacuum leak. If it was a SMALL vacuum leak then you would have to worry, because you would have to find it.
A LARGE vacuum leak is simple : It's your gas tank cap! Take it out and inspect it. Most will recommend to change the whole gas cap. You will know if yours is original once you take a look at it. The original one is very well made,it's part metal. Unless it looks bent or some of the plastic is cracked I don't see the reason people change it. I've looked at the aftermarket ones,I even looked at the OEM one and is still not as good as the original one IMO.
There is a rubber gasket on the inside of it though. THAT'S WHAT NEEDS TO BE CHANGED!

These cars are very sensitive,I would check the gas cap anyway, some of the aftermarket ones are really bad quality and even though they're new they can still give you problems. It's better to start there, trust me,it's the most common problem when it comes to vacuum leaks and P0455.
Check the OEM one and the seal ring here :

http://www.autohausaz.com/search/pro...Fuel/Gas%20Cap

Once you made sure it's tight, check the fuel gauge, make sure you don't have the blinking light anymore. If it's gone the P0455 code will reset by itself and the check engine light will turn off.

it runs great!!! not really used to the sound of a mercedes amg V8 I was used to a chevy V8 so its a much higher pitched sound, just getting used to it!!! and it rides nice some groans when going slow over bumps I think im gonna put it up on ramps tomorrow and lube the chassis and check for leaks, but what would you guys use for lube that won't wreck the bushings? and Ill post some pics I just need to get a new impact strip for the left side (fell off when driving it home looking like im $200 down there...) and wash and wax!!

Congratulations!! And welcome!! You love the car the more you drive it. Like any older model, as long as it is a machine, it will have a few gliches here and there....I bought my 02 for almost two years now and I still haven't fix the leak on my windshield water container...I figured, I'll come to it one of these days
