Replacing E55 Camshafts with E55K Camshafts?
hi there,
first of all ... hi everyone. My name is Fabian, i am from Germany, 32 years old and drive several Mercedes.
My "Daily" is a 2001 W210 E55 with slightly modified Exaust (Race Katalysators, middle exaust silencer removed and a "Eisenmann Race" instead of the original Exaust), V/Max Removed, Chipped up to 380hp as the tuner told me and in pretty good shape i would say.
The car itself had some other mods ... Carlsson 1/16BE Rims, H&R Springs, Bilstein B8 Shock absorbers, painted engine hood, C55 W203 Breaks on the front axle, Brabus Steering wheel ... etc.
I only got a handypic right now ... bad weather in germany prevented me from taking good pictures so far
If you like to see ... i attached some pics. There car was originaly a E430, we swapped the whole engine with all its AMG related stuff, except for bodyparts, so it became a E55 sleeper.
In Germany Enginetuning isn't such a common thing like in the states so i would be happy to get any answers about my "little" problem.
I want to change my Camshafts from Stock to E55K Camshafts. I allready found the comparision pics in the forum somewhere but i didnt find anyone who did this before? so i have several questions about this tuning:
first of all ... i allready got the camshafts for nearly "nothing" so there is no benefit/cost question around ... if it brings up 10hp, fine ... why not?
- does it make sense?
- does it work?
As long as is see in the EPC all partnumbers are the same, but i worry about lift of the E55K camshaft, does it lift the valves more so i can get some trouble with my pistons or does this work?
Any tipp would be appriciated.
thanks a lot and greetings from germany, Fabian

E55k Cams
I'm not sure if you'll benefit from it since those cams are optimized for the kompressed engines. Since you're running n/a there is no boost. So those cams may not do much.

Yeah ... i know ... but if i switch to Kleemann i would buy the whole set (Compressor, Headers, Camshafts) and not only the Cams ... but this is a little to expensive for a car worth the half of the upgrade kit ... in my opinion.
As long as i got the 55K Camshafts for a real small amount of money ... 100$ both ... i think about to simply give it a try.
Anyone here who every tought about such an experiment? I am really new to Camshaft Timings etc. but as long as it wont get worse (power, fuel etc.) i like to try it ...

You don't necessarily have to buy the kompressor and the headers(although it would be a nice amount of gain). You can just buy the K cams by itself and use it.
If you use the Kompressor made cams you will not benefit from it because the lobes and lifts on those are made to match the kompressors boost. Since there is no boost in your engine you won't gain anything.

hmn ... allright ... not exactly what i wanna hear but maybe your right. I hoped to get a little kick because of my ECU Upgrade, on the n/a Engines this means only ... more fuel and more injection time ... isnt it so? In my beliefe the SC Camshafts are opening a little longer/earlier so i tought this might be a good combination.
I think when i buy something from Kleemann it would be the whole package or simply place a E55K Engine under my hood.
i just tought it might be a nice (and cheap) upgrade ... at least it is no big deal to change them, maybe i`ll give it a try anyway ... but after this Thread i cant be disapointed if it brings "nothing". Thanks a lot dudes I´ll keep you informed what i´ll do and of course if it worked out or not.

i would suggest the kleemann headers, a lighter pulley and resonator and 2nd cat delete and x-pipe. Also, k&n filters and mod to the intake would make some gains. Other then that, you might need to get a E55k for more horse and torque

Several years ago I asked Kleemann about running a set of stock 55K cams in a 430 and their response was "7 to 10 HP and similar TQ"...... I think I recall seeing someone on the W208 non AMG page who has done this swap. Might try searching that page for some more info.

I'm running a set of Klee cams along with my original twin-screw and IIRC was gaining 20-25hp from the cams alone. But this was a very long time ago so i don't have the exact figures. But it does help a lot!

Sweet wagon kaype!
If I'm interpreting these correctly, the 55K cams have a slightly longer duration but slightly lower lift than 55 N/A cams. Those that are more knowledgeable feel free to correct me! The N/A cams are from a W209 CLK55; I'm not sure of any differences that may exist between the W210 and W209 55 cams.
https://mbworld.org/forums/3004898-post33.html
You may want to try to pm member "PTE". He worked with VRP to develop the specs for the VRP/PTE cams I am running in my N/A C55 (and that many W211 E55 guys run as well), so he should be able to help.
As others have said, don't expect much N/A, but I don't regret swapping mine

Thanks for all the information.
@dre5373, yeah ... these pictures i found allready ... but didnt see clearly what all the information means, but after a 2nd view at the pics i agree ... a little less lift, a little longer opening.
i try to contact "PTE", maybe he could give me a clear "yes" or "no"
and if it is a no ... 100 bugs for 55k cams isnt to much i think
greetings, Fabian

i did a similar swap from my 500 to the 55 n/a in my w215. the 55k? nonsense! get the weistec twin screw s/c and you'd probably get better numbers than the 55k

yeah ... this is also a good solution if you are willing to spend A LOT of Money but as soon as I am not winning in the Lottery I have to stick to thinks i can afford without getting some serious problems in explaining this to my wife
I got a answer from PTE with some real good facts, I hope it is in his mind if I share this information so I quote them:

The m-113 K cams from a w-211 will drop right in , They have a little less lift , but open the intakes 1* sooner. They also have a small acceleration ramp which snaps them open faster too. So you will pich up some HP. from 2000 rpm to the shift point

Good to hear Pat could help you out
Not sure if you are aware, or if this even applies to the W210, but just in case...Mercedes used torque-to-yield bolts on the M112/M113 cam bridge and stresses they must be replaced. If you are using the Kleemann cam installation instructions available online, they DO NOT mention this. I was 2/3rds through my swap before I looked in my StarTek DVD for something and found this. Additionally, Kleemann lists the torque specs for the M113 different than MB as well. If I recall, the Kleemann instructions use the torque specs for the M112, which StarTek says are different values than the M113.
PM me if you think any of the info from StarTek will help and good luck!

I asked him exactly to switch the camshaft from a 55K to a W210 55 N/A but posted only the short quote from his answer
If have a StarDiagnosis with the complete ASRA ... yes, i know that they write to renew the screws.
The proper torque for the screws is 1st Stage 10NM and 2nd Stage 90°.
greetings, Fabian

a short status report:
I switched the Camshafts 2 days ago and drove allready 250km with the new ones. A test on the Highway ... Autobahn ... will come the next days, unfortunatelly germany ist the only country worldwirde where no speedlimits exists so i could get a real good result if the new 55K Camshafts working well.
Until now i could say PTE was right, i got a slight HP "upgrade" from aprox. 2000rpm and ... what i hopped ... the sound got a little bit more "dirty" like the sound from a 55K Engine.
I made 2 Videos, 1 before and 1 after the camshaft switch to have a comparison regarding the sound.
Maybe you are intrested :
Original (No middle resonator, secondary Metal Race Kats, Eisenmann Race Exhaust):
With 55K Camshafts (nothing else changed):
i like!
i also have made some good pics of my car ... in germany everyone is a picture fanatic, maybe in the states also, so here you go ... some pictures of my "sleeper".
greetings, Fabian

hi Zayed,
a friend of mine drives a W203 C30 CDI AMG and upgraded to the 360mm AMG Breaks from a W204 C63. Unfortunately this Breaks wont fit a W210 so i bought the C30 Calipers from him for a real good price and mounted them on my W210. They fit 1:1 ... you only have to switch right and left side because of the air vent. The C30/C55 W203 Breaks have 345mm with 4 pistons, the Original E55 Calipers have 334mm with 2 Pistons. I am very happy with the "new" breaks ... at least you buy 4 discs sets and pads with the money you would spend on 1 set of Original W210 334mm AMG discs *sic!*
And ... the fixed Calipers look much nicer then the floating calipers originaly mounted on a W210 AMG
