rear axle snapped

Well found out what the problem is , thought it was the trannny but I guess it turned out to be the rear drivers side axle ..
has anyone had to replace theirs before ..
did you use aftermarket or OEM ..
does anyone know if it has to be e55 specific or can I take one off a e430 or c43 or something or that nature ..
any help would be greatly appreciated ..

Ouch....that sucks. Did the shaft break or the splines?

I pulled my driver's side rear axle out when I replaced the rear bearing back in 02-2012. It wasn't that big of a deal to remove. I can not answer your question if it is a generic shaft, but EPC indicates two different axles. One is bolted and one probably just slips in.
E55 has the bolt in one. Part number: A 210 350 09 56
I suspect that if you find a E430, and it has the bolted in (see picture) axle, then it would work.

I am assuming this is less of a problem than a blown tranny?

I wish I could help (per your other post) but this type of issue is far out of my league.

OH! Well that's the good news I was waiting for!! Waaaaay better that than the transmission, for sure! I guess our transmissions are robust, after all, but I'm still getting mine flushed this week!

Flushing the transmission would be the last thing I would do, just before jumping off a short pier. There is a filter inside of the trans, just how do you replace this with a new one when you flush, all this will do is move all metal and clutch particulate throughout the trans. Save your dollars and do a drain, filter change and refill ,drive it for 1000 miles then do it again if you cannot drain the converter, other than this if flushing is in your mind be prepared for future issues.

I think we're exchanging semantics here... I said "flush" when what you described is exactly what my Indie shop suggested. To say "flush" is the quick way to describe "do a drain, filter change and refill"... while one word will suffice, I can see how the exact meaning might be confusing. My understanding is that there is a "filter kit" for this operation that would be used to replace my existing filter.

Looks like the CV joint broke.

Did the mechanic rebuild your existing axle. or did he replace it with a rebuilt one?

Relatively easy repair, but probably gave your gut a huge knot for a while...

I had my rear axle bolt shear off and almost lost my entire wheel.

I only found OEM axles, they are specific to E55 and came directly from Germany.
Each axle runs about $1000. Might as well do the wheel bearings (do both sides) while your in there...
