Shock suggestions

1999 E55. I have the Euro spec springs installed. I am thinking I should replace the stock shocks with Bilstein HD sport shocks but wondered if you guys had any suggestions

I recommend the Sports because I feel like the length is better suited for our cars, even at stock height. I went from HD's to Sports.

I used Koni adjustables. Could not be happier. Length was same as original Bilsteins and no putting fronts on the back etc with the Koni's. You can adjust the damping from soft to hard and anything in between in about five minutes for all four corners.

Ditto; although I've never played with the adjustments like I initially thought I would. I started on the softest setting and haven't touched them.

After working on Mercedes for years. The greatest bang for the buck shock is the Bilstein, made in Germany for German cars. LUVVVV sports, best shock ever. Koni's aren't bad, but if you don't want adjustability I say Bilsteins for the WIN

I am starting to look into getting shocks as well and I am considering rebuilding the originals.

When I was changing my sway bar bushings I saw a little leakage from the fronts. They do not go down very far on the shock though.

Once they leak is it the beginning of the end?

I went with Koni FSDs. They're very smooth riding but not really firm enough for my liking. If the car can sit out of service, you can have the stock shocks rebuilt. They are manufactured by Billstien. If you contact Billstien's US office they can provide you details of where to send them and the total cost.

I went with the Bilstein B8 Sports. Fronts delivered already but the Rears are on an 8 week back order.

$516 for 4 shipped seemed pretty good to me.

Thanks for this input on the FSDs. I was considering them...

Looks like it's KONI adjustables for me on my new-to-me '01...

Where is the best (i.e., cheapest ) source for these shocks and Euro springs?

TIA

I considered the FSD's as well - the technology intrigued me. Nonetheless I ended up with the Sport Yellows. About a year and a half ago when I was shopping for the shocks I found the best price at www.tunersports.com. They were $464 including shipping at the time.

Best of luck,

Hey Mitch... let me know if this helps-

Koni shock source:

http://www.emnotek.com/p-4152-merced...le-shocks.aspx

about $130.00 for each, which is cheaper than what I found on Ebay -

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Koni-8041-1318SPORT-Externally-Adjustable-Sport-Twin-Tube-Shock-Absorber-/311130518235?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4870d2f2db
Euro spring source - try Gert at Carnewal:
http://www.carnewal.com/Suspension
since his website caters mostly to Porsche, email Gert directly:
gert@carnewal.com

I ordered Front:
A210.321.32.04
Rear:
A210.324.38.04

A note from Gert about how my order translated to what was actually sent:

Hi Kirk,

The part nrs Front: A210.321.32.04 and Rear: A210.324.38.04 are for an Euro E55 AMG up to 1998.

Since your car is a 2000 model, the correct springs for the European E55AMG are A210 321 21 04 for the front ant A210 324 36 04 for the rear.

Attached are the parts drawings from Mercedes that show you the part nrs.
The blue highlighted section is the spring for the Euro E55 AMG when you select the year 2000.
( code 800 = model year 2000)

If you select code 808 (= MY'98) you will get different springs.

Thanks,
Gert.

I'm ready to order shocks for my car...
I'm deciding between the Koni Adjustables (adjustability) or the Bilstein Sports (cheaper). I will likely be running the Vogtlands springs.

Does anyone know if the Konis - at their softest setting - are softer, firmer, or the same as the Bilstein Sports?

My car will be a daily driver, so a nice compliant ride is important.

TIA

I've got FSD's in the E55 and Bilstein Sports in the C43. The FSD's suit a daily driver really well, certainly not as firm as a Bilstein but great improvement over the factory shocks. The bilsteins firm but not harsh. It really depends on what you're using the car for. A Mixed daily drive/track (circuit) car would suit Koni adjustables quite well.

This thread is helping me decide on shocks too. Mine are not blown, but the left rear seems to be seeping just slightly now. The Koni FSD's seem like they would be perfect for my use.

Mitch,

On other cars I have been through all of the options. Koni adjustables are the safest if you want to try to "tune" the ride better but I found my self constantly fussing over the correct adjustment and for what? I decided I just didn't want to be able to tune. The OEM Bilsteins are perfect for me. I do not use my car for anything but commuting (occasionally spirited of course!).

These cars are very, very well tuned from AMG for performance and comfort. My recommendation is to keep it simple and go OEM.

FWIW, the HD's are indeed very harsh.
