Farewell to the E55
In a way, I hated to see it go, loved every minute I spent weekend tinkering and tooling around town. My hour long commute was always a blast. But April 1st I was sitting at a stop light, about to turn left, when an elderly gentleman, in front of me, in an SUV decided he wanted gas instead of turning left as we were all lined up to do. To make his illegal right turn, he would have to cut across three lanes, but first, to clear the car in front of him, he needed to back up. Which he proceeded to do, and being a half car length in front of me, when he punched it he never hit his brakes. Totaled my E55.
As of Friday I'm a proud owner of a 2008 E63, so I'll be switching forums. You guys were always a great support. Thanks for being a great resource!

BTW: I still have a, brand new in the box, H&R Rear Sway Bar that I never got around to install, if anyone is interested PM me

Sorry about the e55, hate when we see one bite the dust, but sounds like the car. Shielded you from any possible injuries.
Enjoy the e63 curious to hear your thoughts as to how it compares to the e55.

+1 one on getting hit. There are a few lower mileage ones around here I keep my eye on in the event of but its just not my car and who knows if they have taken care of theirs like mine. Just alot of effort all over again.
Benzokirk, why did you choose the 08?

To your point, the scarcity of quality, low mileage, E55's out there pushed me in the W211 direction. To find an affordable '08 with around 53k miles on it, well maintained with copious records across 2 owners caught my attention while I was in the market after the accident. 507 hp pushed me over the edge. I wanted something that I could mod minimally that would be just as powerful and a blast to drive. Kinda wish I'd gotten an W211 E55 though since I never really got to own/drive a SC version.

+1 on that, I believe I will too. From what I've been told they're just as much of a blast to drive but the 63 is more refined, in terms of power.
What would you say the main differences are, Strigoi, and what should I look for in the way of maintenance and service?

After seeing pics of your former car posted by illest, its crazy how seemingly minor damage totals these cars

Im torn on which E to get next when I have to. I do like the SC 06 but have always driven NA cars like your 08. A few mods gets the SC to the HP like or better than the 08 but then the platforms are different. Tough choices ahead.

Maintenance wise it's the normal stuff with cars like these. They do have an issue with the fuel tank leaking that Mercedes will cover under warranty. Mine was leaking at the senders under the back seat and made the garage smell like gas when it had a full tank (started 2 months after I bought it). They had a new tank and senders installed in 2 days and gave me a loaner while it was getting fixed. The engine mounts were both toast on mine when I bought ($120 in parts for both). I also recently had the keyless entry for the driver's door die on me. That requires spending a few hundred for a new door handle to fix. I just use the fob now so it's not a big deal. I'll take care of it eventually. Front brakes are also more expensive than the E55, but there are options out there that help a bit.
If the car doesn't have it done yet, do a resonator delete. It's not too loud inside and sounds so much better. It's barely noticeable that it was done when cruising on the freeway. I'd love to do a secondary cat delete, but that's a no-no here in CA.
Like I said, you're going to love it. If you liked the E55 you'll love the E63.

A lot more power, I feel that it handles better and definitely has more stopping power. Being able to choose between comfort and sport modes is nice. Interior is obviously nicer and I prefer the more heavily bolstered seats. I recently drove down to Ontario (LA area, 1000 mile round trip) and back and it was great. Super comfortable and just ate up the miles. I averaged around 21mpg on the way back. That included a lot of stop and go traffic since I hit the morning commute on the 210 and kept the CC set at 77-85mph on the way back on 5. They're wonderful cars and I am in love with mine.

Yeah, I'm sooo looking forward to it. I'll be driving it home from Houston next Monday. It'll be great bonding time with it.

Wow, I just saw this post. Sorry about the lost ...another chapter closed and a new chapter begins
I have been thinking about upgrading to the e63 as I could have one a few years ago.....a seller from the next town over was selling his (original Cali car) but I had my e55 and had nothing wrong plus no car payment.
Benzokirk...good luck to you on your new e63 and hope to hear from you, pop in this forum every now and then.

My 210 had AMS shorty headers, 200 Cell primary cats, an x-pipe in place of the 2nd cats, and a resonator delete. It sounded awesome after all that but the E63 note kills it.
