Failed Smog in CA, Secondary Cat delete
So went to smog today and the tech caught that the secondary cat was deleted and even though the emissions would be fine he failed me... What to do now?
main option is buying the secondary cat section of the exhaust of a total'd one in my area and having local muffler shop weld it on... Anyone who did the secondary cat delete still have the scrapped cats sitting around?
any help is appreciated.. 2000 w210 e55 amg

Sadly only thing you can get away with in Cali now for exhaust mods is mufflers and resonator removal. Everything else is a instant fail..... I dont blame smog techs for not wanting to just overlook a secondary cat removal tho. Its their business and they can lose the license to operate and also get fined a hefty amount by the state. Basically not worth the risk for them.

It should be fine with those as they are california certified cats. It says rear right on the one you listed i dont think there is a difference in the rear right or left but worth giving them a call to see if there is a difference. If you have these and a cali smog tech says no pass then they are lying to you. Plus Magnaflow will send a cert paper for the cats that prove they are legal and california certified.

It's hard for my friend in California to imagine how lax is is in Tennessee. No visual, no sniff, no inspection. Mail in your registration fee and your tags gets renewed for another year.

Gut the shells of two cats, ream the openings, slip them over the pipes and have them tacked on. Gives an appearance that secondaries are in place and no one will ever know otherwise. Metal epoxy can be applied to look like a clean weld. I actually made the flex pipe on my Audi look like a cat and coded it out of the tune; in TX the emissions testing is only handled by OBDII. No one ever questioned it, despite the constant traces of soot above the pipes. Alternatively, a pipe with a CARB exemption number will typically get you around that; most shops will not look too closely. Adding a bit of flat black or chrome exhaust paint will further sell that one. I don't know if there are any CARB-approved mid-pipes out there for the 210 chassis, though.
