98 E430 Tires

Hey All,

Can I use 255/45/17 for rear tires? especially for winter/snow/icy driving in Chicago? Or should I stay with 235/45/17.

Any suggestions or comments on which brand I should go with?

I'm a new member here from Chicago and trying this forum 1rst time.

Thanks,
Yaaar

Wink

On my 430 I ran 255/40 17's and 235/45's. The only problem is (obviously) not being able to rotate them. I would use a winter only tire in those conditions, like the Blizzaks. Heard good things about them, but my 55 never even gets wet unless it's being washed, so I couldn't tell you about them first hand.

Don't know if you typed it wrong, but 255/45/17 is not the size recommended for the rear. It would be 255/40/17. Sticking with 235/45/17 all around is good.

You are right buddy, it is 255/40/17 not 45/17. Are there any good websites that I can go and look for these tires. I was checking tirerack.com.
Someone also told me not to get 255 especially in Chicago winter/icy weather, So I think I'm going with 235/45/17.

Any recommendation on what brand of tires should I go with. I drive mainly on highways. Also, what kind of oil you guys recommend for winter weather??? Synthetic maybe?

Thanks again
Irfan

Wider tires are worse on snow, so the best tire option performance wise would be the 235/45/17. Discount Tire has 3 Winter Tire options in 235 - www.tires.com .

Since you have an E430 you should 'only' be using Synthetic oil. This engine is the 3 valve, dual spark plug modular engine also in the E320 V6 since 1998 and the can only use Syn. When this engine first came there was no standard and many owners used "dinosaur awl" and sludge build up occured. Mercedes was sued for not recommending the Syn oil and they issued a Technical Service Bulletion (TSB) and had to give all owners that used dino oil an extented warranty on the engine and a discount service coupon or somethin.

Thanks man, You a life saver. I just bought the car with 113K miles but the cars runs awesome so far(it's already 116K). I'm gonna go and change the oil tonight. Now is there any especial brand of synthetic oil and just tell them to use synthetic?

How often do I have to take it for service(spark plugs and filters) don't know what else they change in regular 10k service. Do you recommend doing it only with Benz dealers or anyone who works with benz/bmw's.

Thanks again for all your help,
Irfan

Thanks for the compliments. On another thread a Forum Member got pissed off because I posted the facts. Some people hate to be corrected, but being on this board means you want to learn something about your car I thought.

Anyway, back to the subject.

Mercedes AMG cars recommend Mobil-1. If available, go for it, but I would use that or Castrol Syntec, if available in the grade require - 15W-50.

Spark Plugs - 100K miles
Oil Changes - average 10 - 13k miles

I don't know of any shops.

Oil change every 10-13K miles? Hmmm..... even though MB suggests so, I would still stick to "old" car schedule.... 3-5K miles or every 3-6 months.

It doesn't hurt to change oil more often.... it's not that expensive either.

But yes, I would suggest to use Mobil 1. Some ppl in the forum also suggest to use AMSoil.

Do you also change your plugs using the "old" car schedule - every 30K miles or less? Go "old school" all the way!

Nope..... as plugs won't screw engine's internal parts if broken since they are not moving. But oil and filter lubricates the engine's moving parts..... so changing more often would ensure the engine is well lubricated
