No doubt this is somewhere in the manual but I just discovered it and it's really useful in the pre-overtake stage:
Push the lever to the left as if manually changing down, but hold it there for a second. The box will automatically select the gear for best acceleration.
How cool is that??

Yes, say you're in 5th, cruising, hold the stick to the left for a second and it will drop to 3rd or whatever gear will give the most power for the speed that you're travelling at. All without changing your pressure on the gas pedal.
Better than kickdown, especially if you're in a line waiting for a space to overtake, as you can already be in the best gear when the overtaking chance comes.

Mine does that to, but the way i looked at it was this...it just kicks it down to the lowest, yet safest gear possible when you hold it to the left. It wont shift to 2nd if the rpms would be too high, so it switches to 3rd in those instances, etc.

My salesman actually told me that before I bought my car
(Thanks MarkusBenz) I've tried it, works pretty well. Sometimes I forget I have it and tap a couple times, which makes it jerky. Good for getting around corners quickly. I noticed that the tranny (at least the 7G) likes to keep loooow gear when say slowing down to 15-20 then accelerating - will still be in 3rd or 4th!

Are you sure this isn't just the computer selecting the lowest possible gear that won't over-rev the engine? If you're at a stop and hold the lever to the left it goes to first.

2012 C63 Coupe Iridium Silver
it doesn't drop to 1st
from what i noticed in my dad's old E500, is that it doesn't actually drop to the 'optimal gear.'
It drops 2 gears at a time - but will never drop to 1st. So think about it. There are only 5 gears in the W211 gearbox. That means this has only one function:
cruising at 50 in fifth. To activate this function you have to push the gear lever to the left and hold. But when u push it to the left, it's going to change down to fourth and THEN change down to second if you're still holding the lever there for a second.
Because the feature wont change to first and this isn't a 6 or 7 speed gearbox, it can't do anything else.
Of course if you're going too fast for 2nd gear, it wont skip 2 gears... But then u might as well change down twice manually![tard](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/tard.gif)
*edit* However i'm sure it functions properly in the new 7-speeder :p

Ok. Ok. I'm an idiot...
When I read the post, I was using the shifter buttons behind the steering wheel.. The steering wheel buttons don't perform that function but the gear shift lever itself does.
Oops.
Anyways, it is way too slow to be useful. By the time the computer decides what gear to select I could have done it myself 3 times already.
