Can we discuss for the 435,432th time....Air Intake Snorkel
Also, is their any other things I can do to increase air intake.....any mods. I found some sites with carbon fiber intake mods for BMW's, but no Merc.
Thanks for any info.
I guess no aftermarket intake mods huh? (Carbon Fiber etc..)
Bob, I hear it doesn't make a big big difference, but as they say in Brooklyn...couldnt hoit?
You sure that's right. I asked them for the S55 snokel drivers side and they started busting my chops about what VIN I had etc....as I have said 1 million times....if there was a competition for worst dealer in USA, mine would Three Peat!!
As for feeling a difference...I changed it within a week of getting the car, so couldn't really tell you. The stock tube is almost half the diameter of the S55 tube at the same point in the bend.

The Best of Mercedes & AMG
Went back to the stock snorkle and my initial throttle tip-in is a lot smoother now. It seems like the large snorkle isn't a good fit. It fits on, but the square attachement seems to loose enough to where air can leak out.
I say give it a try to cure your curiosity...It's cheap...like $8 bucks. But I didn't notice any performance gains on my butt dyno..

Any thoughts....

Renntech has some type of intake mod (different throttle body etc) ....calling them now.
Any thoughts....
Not a very good idea at all... Sucking hot air into the intake will take all kinds of power away.
The optimum air intake should scoop cold, high-pressure outside air. Studying aerodynamics has shown that the highest pressure air is available near the bottom front of the car (On the E55, picture this as being where our fog lights are).
If we could create a set of air scoops and put them behind the mesh screens next to the fog lights on each side of the car, that would be the best place to collect high velocity cold air.
I've looked at this and even attempted to make something, but, it is just too tight to fit any tubes down there. But, even if it could work, on our cars with the throttle body being at the back of the engine, this wouldn't be a good solution because the length of the pipes would be too long and it would slow down the air travelling through those pipes.
Mercedes put the air scoops in the front grille. This was a better location for our cars because of the location and orientation of our air boxes. It creates a shorter path to the throttle body and therefore keeps the velocity in the tubes higher.
I think for stock and lightly modified cars, the stock airboxes are fine. They will probably become a restriction once you get up in the 650hp range. The best thing is to find a way to improve on what Mercedes has already done. GruppeM has the right idea but the cost is just too high in my opinion. (They have 2 models of it $3,600 US and $5,000US).

GruppeM Filter Ram Chargers are composed of a custom made intake duct and shaped to meet the specifications of individual cars. They produce an increase of 12 to 18 horse power (depending on the engine conditions).
Please find the following prices and model of the Filter Ram Charger for Mecedes:
FRC Mercedes W210 AMG - E55 = GBP £1,606 + £130.00 delivery charge
FRC Mercedes W211 AMG - E55(2004) = GBP £1,786.00 + 130 delivery charge
I was close about the HP increase.. I guessed 20hp maximum and they said 18hp on the high side. It works out to $3,600US. The $5,000 price tag is not for our car.
