M5 vs. E55 road test

The mod over at the M5 board just got back from racing the M5 against several other cars. Here is his post:

I wanted to reply that I while I'm very impressed w/ the new M5's V-10, I wouldn't be caught dead in such a eyesore of a car...

LOL. I obviously have a split garage. I'm on the waiting list for the M5 and should have one around October. I'm all for the drive.

well gustav is certainly non-biased actually hes a douche who banned me after 55 posts for asking who has come out of an e55 to a new m5? (no replies were given) anyway, from 90-150 this car shines (m5) and at 144 is certainly beats the viper. first, as those fellas like to mention who gives a rats *** what it can do the 'ring in. if (when) i smoke any m5 from stoplights to 1/4 mile what are they gonna say. "hey, lets get on a 10 mile stretch or road and ill take you by a 100 feet!" as far as the car takin a new viper (and by comparison a c6 z06) a modded tt p car and a lambo with 500hp and 38? lb ft tq in a 2 ton car??? those #'s just dont add up. anyway. mods to that car are pretty much restricted to ecu and headers so it seems like its pretty maxed out. and derek man, i feel you man. im all for hotrods of all types and i dont discriminate as ive owned an m3 but that m5 is harrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrd to look at. but congrats on your impending purchase. looking forward to an un biased review. and.....ill see you at the track

Actually it comes from the factory with headers, so you can't even really do much with that mod. With individual throttle butterflies and dedicated intakes, I don't see how an ECU would do much either. It seems that the M vehicles are pushing the envelope right out of the box. I like having a car that I modified to become great better than having a great car from the factory. There is more enjoyment and uniqueness in doing this and though I like the platform of the M5, I just don't feel like there is anything left to do.

E63 biturbo
I read somewhere that the M5 has been tested at up to 10,000 rpm reliably, but has been restricted to 8,500rpm for production. With the rev limit raised by an aftermarket chip, the engine could be producing 550-580bhp with not much modifications.

Back to the topic, I still find it hard to believe that a bone stock new M5 is as quick as mentioned, beating the E55 easily. Even harder to believe, it was ran almost level with a Gallardo with 4 passengers!!

http://www.rs6.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=44940

If its true, the M5 must surely be much faster than all the published figures so far??

Then don't read them.

We're here to exchange ideas, not bust on the syntax of how they are expressed.

If it makes you feel better, print them out, make corrections in red, and hang them on your fridge with the corresponding grade.

PS in the off chance you are going to say you “were just trying to help”. That’s what PM’s are for, it’s not nice to embarrass people in public

I don't know if you can call that magazine racing. Seems a bunch of enthusiasts got together. The owners of the E55's & the exotics drove their owne cars against the M5 on an airfield to see how it lined up. And it seems the owners of all the other cars were impressed with the M5's speed.

If it goes up at all. It might be able to hold together, but can it breathe, does it have enough fuel, etc.

This engine will make an easy 600 hp with a ecu tune to 9k intake, cams, bigger throttle bodies, headers, and exhuast. They already tested this for 550 hp for the m6 weather or not they use it will see.

BMW put on so many baffles and restictions on this car to keep the F1 engine from waking up the whole damn town lol.

The only difference from p400 mode and p500 mode is a 10% restriction in the throttle bodies. What do you think will happen when you free up 30-40% more air to get in?

the bore and stroke up this engine is setup up to make massive top end power(F1)style

nowack tuned a NA e39 m5 to 540hp they will break 600 hp easy with this car.

just drop in filters should give this car alot up top. This engine is making its max tourqe at like 6.3k with cams($$$)you would shift that even higher so the top end would gain alot aswell.

For a quick comparison the bmw williams f1 car makes like 75 ft lb of tourqe but 900 hp up top.

LOL Filters! A few HP and RPM maybe.

Simply shifting RPM up higher in an effort to gain HP will reduce torque, HP and drivability at lower RPM. My experience taught me that this will usually slow the car down unless I make modifications elsewhere like tranmission, final drive, weight, displacement, etc. It is no surprise that this car is slow(er) off the line than other cars in its class (sedan) which accellerate quickly and see it diminsh as speed increases. High RPM engines are usually reserved for smaller sports cars that don't have the extra weight to move off the line.

What I'm trying to say is that it is never as simple as it seems.

F1 engines make more torque that 75 at peak HP. More like 375. (HP*5252/RPM)

Well the new M5 may be a E55 killer, but the valet guys are still not going to leave it out front... it's shame such a well engineered car has to be dressed the way it is...

I find it very hard to believe that the M5 is an E55 killer. I define "killer" as so much faster that you won't see the other guy after a few minutes. That won't happen. I have friends with M3s and E55s in Germany and it takes a while for the AMG to pull away at higher speeds when the M3 is wind tunneling. Then, both speed governors cut in. The E55 pulls away by a few hundred feet on the Autobahn. This is already a significant difference. Seeing how close the E55 and M5 are in magazine performance and horsepower, there will not be more than a slight advantage for the M5 ( a few car lengths) but no kill. Anything else is just unrealistic.

AFAIK Nowack is releasing a 550hp tuning kit soon and a 600hp one later. Dont know how they are going to get those numbers.

Also, everyone was driving their own cars so I doubt that it was biased.

crowder-too funny!

so i see some m5 posters here yet no one has the ***** to put your cars in your sig? i had pics of my car on my sig but you all pretend to be impartial by hiding where your from. and gustav, that gustappo bans ANY negative/controversial talk of the m5 so as not to be uninvited to a bmw sponsored event to let him drive around a ringer from the factory. and saying such stupid things as itll beat a viper is just plain stupid on gustavs part. i dont think he is that dumb but who knows what hes been given to say such things.

and skratch, are you serious? i havent seen you around here so welcome. but are you from the m5 board? are you a younger person? because it seems you have limited knowledge of automobiles. just wondering what your background is.

so i f the m5 with 2 tons, 500hp and 380tq is an 11 sec car. A) bmw has broken the laws of physics. and 2) ill hail the king

It's pretty simple if you know what horsepower is:

HP = Tq x RPM / 5250
