Helmet Requirement at Drag Races

When you take your E55 to the Drags do you have to have a helmet until after your first time trial? After you run a sub 14 sec quarter do they then require you to find a helmet to continue?

Does anyone have an online source for helmets and which ones are the best for the money?

I plan on taking my E55 and my Vette out soon. Unfortunately it will be at least 3 weeks from now and will significantly hotter than it is presently. I'll try to get some Vids (if I don't embarrass myself).

In Australia you need a crash helmet at all times, at any race event: drag, circuit, open drive days etc. Buy a good one from a motorcycle store. Not sure about North America, but would be surprised if they allowed anybody to race without one. Especially with your passion for litigation...

I’ve been to tracks throughout the US and they all seem to be the same.

Helmets are a must just to drive your car into the track.

AND, make sure you have a Snell 90 or better approved helmet. A Snell rated helmet assures that if you wipe it, your helmet AND head won't crack like Eggland's Best.

Don't let the punks at the local bike shop tell you "this should be good enough"....imagine you are a drag official when you look at the helmet, if there is no Snell sticker or printing on the inside.....don't buy it. Nothing worse then being turned away at the track when you are all ready to rock.

Wait till you drag your beast....it is by FAR the easiest car to drag on earth....just point and shoot and you'll run 12's. Now to get er tweaked down closer to 12 flat and 11's...that is where it really starts to get fun.

Local Honda shop sold me a Snell approved from under 200$. Nice helmet too.

I have only personally been to a few tracks but have never heard of any track that didn't require a helmet at all times for any kind of racing.

Standard at NHRA and IHRA tracks is 13.99 and quicker requires a "snell" approved helment. Look for the Snell sticker in the helmet as this is what all of the tech inspectors want to see.

At Moroso Park in Palm Beach FL, they will let you run your first ever run on the 1/4 mile to establsih your time. When the tech inspectors see your car, they will ask you if you have raced there before, and they definitely know all about the AMG E55 - they will tell you that you are more than likely going to need a helmet for your next run.

As soon as you do a run below 13 seconds you need a helmet. At Moroso they rent out helmets for $15 bucks for the day. So if you are in Florida - head on over to Moroso - its a blast and you wont get the grin off your face for weeks.

Thanks for all the input. I'm looking at the same type of helmet that MB used in the AMG Challenge. It's an open face SA2000 Bell or Pyrotect. Seems to be reasonably priced and comfortable. Would anyone recommend a full face instead? I'm getting whipped up just thinking about it.

I have borrowed a helmet to do SCCA events in the Vette and have never officially run it on a Drag raceway. I don't have any doubts that with nitrous it will run in the low 11's possibly 10's but I might need to bump up the N2O to a 200 HP shot. It's a 6 speed so I'm afraid it won't be very consistant. The E55 is the perfect dragcar. HA HA HA

The Challenge helmets were M2000, not the SA required for racing. Since the 2005 is the latest designation, 00 will be in clearance sales soon.

I just got ran out of a track tonight for this very reason. I ran a 12.25 on the first pass and a 12.22 on the second and the guy was yelling at me to get the car out of the staging lanes. I was done for the night.
