I've been getting the following 2 messages at varying times while driving. Once I shut the car off for a while, it does reset.
Active headlamps currently unavailable
and
ESP malfunction, visit workshop
They both show at the same time, car runs normal otherwise.

Sunman's correct. Somehow the steering angle sensor needs to be normalized, the way he described.
By the way, if the battery was disconnected, do the one touch windows work either? Because if it was, there would be a whole bunch of things that may not work correctly. (sunroof, seats, windows, memory functions.....)

Never thought of the steering angle. The battery was not disconnected. It seemed to start happening after some spirited driving. Nothing close to being considered hard or abusive. Thanks for the info, I'll try the steering thing later when I got out.

I've had this problem recently. Whenever the battery cable was disconnected and the car was raised up I got those exact two malfunction messages.
Both went away after driving the car around the block, turning it off, then back on. Also, as suggested above, my one-touch windows and sunroof capability took longer to reset, but everything went back to normal.

Ah yes it turns out it was a bad battery. They have about 15 or 16 printed errors that came up with Star Diagnostics listed here on the freaking service bill. But they fixed all that and the car works fine now.

Sorry to bring up and old thread, but i am having the exact same problems with my CLS500 now. I am about to take it to the dealer...
Did anyone of you have a real answer what the problem with this was?

I am having this Active Headlamps Currently Unavailable/ESP Malfunction warning message. I have tried the steering wheel maneuver several times and it does not work. All window, sunroof, etc functions work normally. I have had my E320 CDI in the "workshop" for this same thing before. They replaced the battery and they replaced an electrical controller. Looks like it is back to the shop again. Very frustrating and not the quality expected from MB!

Back from the dead...I"m having the active headlamp issue as well. No ESP message though. Looks like my right headlamp is turned all of the way to the right and is stuck. No down/up check on the right side when I turn the car on either.

New to the car and don't get the reference...guess I'll be searching. ![Smilie](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Edit: lol, now I get it.
Shop straightened it somewhat, but the issue is still there. Rats.
