Official information on 6,3 Liter AMG engine released
The reputable German magazine Auto Motor und Sport and jesmb.de have released official information on the upcoming 6,3 AMG engine. Here are the specs:
4-valves per cylinder
6208 ccm displacement
Max power: 510 hp @ 6800 rpm
Max torque: 464 lb.ft. @ 5200 rpm
Redline: 7200 rpm
What is most notable about this engine besides its high revving nature ist the fact that it is not an AMG modified Mercedes engine but a completely independent AMG development. This engine will be first seen in the ML 63 AMG in Frankfurt this September and will eventually power the AMG versions of S-class, CL, R-class, SL, CLS, E-class, CLK and SLK. In addition to this engine, there will be a twin turbo version putting out 600 hp and 590 lb. ft of torque.

No thanks! Glad to keep my SC version with my basic mods and have more sauce currently hitting the road then the turbo charged model that is over 2 years away!

The ole noggin already working over here.....so if we put a Kleemann supercharger on a N/A motor that can rev to 8000rpms.....heh heh heh....
On the twin turbs....quick ECU program and we'll get 700hp for sure....noooo problem. Hopefully they are not idiots and give us access to adding more boost. We'll see.

Converting to FI on the new 6.3 $$$$$$
Converting to FI on the new NA 6.3 is going to be very expensive because the compression ratio of the NA version, I bet, will be upwards of 11:1. Not good when it comes to FI. So this means that low compression pistons will be needed in the FI conversion (motor tear down time $$$$$).
The new motor will certainly have a more sporty attitude with the 7200 RPM limit, however not sure how that will go over with the current AMG crowd that is familiar with the the easy going low Rev. attitude of the current FI 55 motor.

Tuned CLK (W209)
The M156 E 63 is a V8 engine, with 4vavles/cylinder.
The only i know for M157 is, it` s arrengement, which is 80degrees.

weak torque...don't understand why mercedes is following BMW's footstep, first with CLS's weird design, then comes the new S's 7-series-wannabe interior, now AMG even ditched their SC'd 55 engine to imitate the new M5's N/A high rev engine?....WHATZ UP?

464 lb. ft. of Torque is not weak by any standards for a NA motor. The BMW M5 only has 385 lb. ft., so the 6.3 AMG motor has 20% more torque than the M5 motor. That is a substantial increase. Comparing it to the FI AMG motors, it is lower, but not by much (50+ lb. ft. less), and that will be made up for by gearing (Torque Multiplication) of most likely an upgraded version of the 7 speed auto. trans. Oh, and I predict this motor will out-perform the M5 because it has 20% more torque and about the same HP.

BoBcanada - Keep the faith buddy a faster shifting trans is not going to make up for, much less beat, 20% more torque - GUARANTEED!!! -

I wouldn't dismiss the advantage of a gearbox so quickly. I'm mostly riding on the evidence given in the Car and Driver SLK 55 test: the car has 40 less HP, about 20 less lb-ft of torque, and 300 more pounds than a Corvette. Yet somehow it ties the mighty six-speed -manual- Vette to 60 mph! The difference, the authors said, could be attributed to the AMG-massaged 7GTRONIC transmission. Let's hope that it can (with a little strenghtening) do the same for the 6.3 litre motor.
