That being said -- there's no substitute for lighter weight, and the 997 handles superbly. The HP rating is very misleading; because of the rearward weight bias the car hooks up and accelerates much faster than a simple power to weight calculation might indicate.
I hate to invoke flames from my E55 brothers, but I think the 997S is in a different category than the SLK55. The SLK55 -- though a wicked performer -- is pushing 3400 pounds; the 911S is right at 3100 pounds. I've driven both, and though the SLK55 is a great car it doesn't quite have the edge of the 911S. If the 911 is a scalpel the SLK is a very fine J.A. Henckels 5-star paring knife -- very comfortable to use and a superb tool, but slightly less precise...

I say go get an order out for the new z06. You'll get better acceleration than the E55 and better handling and braking than the 997s and still have money in your pocket.

Bob...
The I had a 997 S for a short while after I sold my 996TT. I really love the 997, but I needed a car with more space. If space isn't a concern, and I know you got the ML, go for the 997S. If I had the choice between a SLK55, E55 and 997S, and space wasn't a concern, I'd get another 997S in a heartbeat.
Probably a 997TT for me as my next car!

Can never go wrong with a 997S. My partner is taking delivery of his 997S in Sept. They get $$$ with a few extras, his was over $90K.

Bob, get 997S or pre-order 997TT..... I also fall in love w/ 997.... Test drove 997S and liked everything except the power.... so I'm thinking of getting 2nd year 997TT (If you know my experience, you'll know why I don't want 1st year).
IMO, SLK55 is just a different class..... it's more in the Boxster / Cayman class even though SLK55 is way faster than those two.
Z06, yes, it's faster, cheaper, possibly better handling... but.... you'd lose almost half of the value in couple years..... 911 (993 especially and 997 hopefully) seems to hold value very good....

I just don't like the looks of the Corvette. It always makes me think of middle aged men trying to relive their youth. Now that has nothing to do with all the middle aged men trying to relive their youth around here mind you. It's just too 80's and plastic. I also admit I prefer my cars refined rather than edgy as far as MB vs P.

SL 65 AMG and E63s AMG
I drove the SLK55 at the AMG Challenge and was blown away. It was the best handling car there by far. It was also very comfortable. That's the key. If you want comfort and great handlling go with the MB. If you want go kart handling go for the Porsche (second to none). I for one will be getting an S8 Kleemann SLK55 or 63 when I buy next.
I have driven Porsche's and can't get comfortable in the seat. It's fine for 10-15 min then I'm miserable. My Vette is the same way, fine for short rides but for more than 30 min forget about it. I also tire of the harsh ride, I guess I'm just spoiled.
One other thing, drive the 427 Z06 before you plunk out megabucks for the 997, you may be pleasantly surprised with what Chevy has done.

That said, I would get the Porsche if I was in your shoes since you already had the E55.

My daughter loves being in the car (she is 5) and we have a new one on the way in the fall. Even with two kids, the beast will stay and watch the girls grow up

My daughter is 6 and my son just turned two and there is plenty of room back there for them. I just don't like leaving his seat in place because of the way it stretches the leather.
