I just don't understand why BMW would feel like they need to limit their customers to less than the cars' potential.
I would have to say that the 3 year old '03 E55 definetly has an edge over the '06 M5. (that's what I said a couple of months ago and got completely bashed on this forum for)

Curious why the M5 is out and I have yet to see any C&D, MT, or R&T produce 0-60 and 1/4 times? Is it because they can't launch the car?
When the E55 hit the pavement there were times out 1 month before the car hit the streets. Just curious.
At least I know not to be concerned about the new M5 from a dead dig.

thats crazy..... whats does launch control do that is so amazing? Is this new to the SMGIII? I drove my friends M3 SMGII and he didnt' mention it.... of course, now that I think about it, I would get him good off the line with my C32 everytime.... we ran em side by side at least 10 times....

You need to go through menus/submenus to activate it (which you may not have time to do at a stoplight), and 3. You need to wait a certain period of time/drive a certain distance (4 km, I think) before you can use L/C again. I suspect that we will not see very many M5's at the strip. Hopefully, there will be many at road courses.

exactly.... I always thought something was strange.... they reviewed the tester models, but never ran em in the 1/4 or posted stats.... there will be a heads up E55 vs M5 article..... there has to be....

BMW M cars are made for the track and are really useless on the streets.(you can go to AMGs website under FAQ why doesnt AMG offer a manual gearbox) AMG cars are made with autos because that is what people prefer in a mercedes an AMG car is just a fast car for the street and a semi good track car. i have met people with ferraris and lambos that have gotten eaten by AMG's on the street and drags but if you take the same cars to the track the AMG will get eaten. AMG-ultimate street car best everyday driving machine. M-Some of the best track cars for the price ex M3.
This still doesn't answer the question "why is the LC necessary"

Automobile Mag just did a CLS55 vs M6 comparo this month. They didn't post any times of that sort except 0-60 times of 4.4 - M6 and 4.5 - CLS55. Besides that; only their comments about the car I'll scan it if anyone cares to see it. They also mention the 503Hp CLS63 and a "possible" 621Hp CLS65 and the boosted 6.8Lt 697Hp version

im guessing they chose the M6 over the CLS55. its funny cause when motor trend did a e55 vs m5 comparison. The m5 won based soley on handling, they ignored the fact that the m5 was ugly, not as roomy, the interior was terrible (they hated it) and it was tested to be slower than the e55. i dun understand how the m5 actually won? bias maybe?

Magazine test times have been posted before - https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/124961-mb-amg-cls55-vs-bmw-m5-australian-motor-magazine-comparison-test.html
You'll see from the article why the LC is such a problem - the M5 got towed away!

I don't see way launch control is so important..... my Viper has 450 rwhp and 500 rwtq and is 3360 pounds, no traction control, no stability control, no ABS, nothing.... and the car does 1.7 - 2.0 60' times on street tires depending track prep and conditions...

Best transmission for the track, not neccesarily on the street.
Ferraris and E-gear Lambos have the same issue....

Ferrarris with launch control don't have this issue...
....both Car & Driver and Road & Track reported flawless launches and ran sub-12 second 1/4 miles when they tested the new F430 F1 in Europe earlier this year. And does Lambo even have smg?? I thought they only had manuals and/or DSG....

F430 tested in Europe had a Euro spec Launch Control and had much better times then the US version.
Me personally, after driving the new M5,while appreciating the benefits of the SMG,would rather have a "normal" manual tranny and thats what I'm ordering for F600.
I'm just not tracking my cars enough to justify the need for an electronic transmission.

What about P400 and something ohter than S6 or S5, would it make any difference in the traffic ?
