Trapped a bt lower than I thought it should. Also, 60 ft time should be better. But, at least, we have some real world number. Hopefully, with LC activated, some folks like DerekFSU (an experienced drag racer) should post much better numbers

a few...
how many miles do you have on it? the 12.7 was kinda surprising but I guess they can improve but 113, I would've thought it would trap closer to 118 but again, I am sure it will get better. Thanks for the input, I've been wondering how it'd do.

Yep, Derek and just about anybody else with a steady right foot can launch our stock E55 all day long better than this M5.
On my 3rd ever drag I did 12.35 sec with 1.87 60'. There are many guys on this forum who have done even better. What is this morbid fascination with the M5 amongst some of the guys here?

Thanks, for posting.

One time slip does not answer every question, but it sure is interesting. That the driver submitted it would suggest it was his/her best of the day (or maybe the only run).

We know Derek trapped quite a bit higher in his "no time" M5.

Now that another M5 time has been posted, I feel comfortable listing my times. I will post them this evening but I think my fastest of the two was 13.01 (?) at 116mph. The 60' without LC was atrocious at something like 2.3 I believe. All others who were in attendance please feel free to chime in.

Oh, Iiiiiiii get in nowwwww.

Gustav has been showing rolls because the M5 would get it's little handling a$$ spanked from a start correct?

This thing sounds like a high revving monster and I bet really performs from a roll......but outta the hole....BAWWWW HHAAAA HAAAA.

So I guess we need to rewrite the headline, "The KING IS DEAD....LONG LIVE THE KING...er erhhhhh from a rolling start that must exceed 60mph or order to get my car into high revving range"

a few...
Rafal, I think everyone is just interested in how it would do in the drag times considering its been in all the magazines for going on over a year now. Everyone has compared it to the E55 and I guess our fascination is the possibility of another alternative to the "Ultimate Super Sedan".

The 60' time of 2.3 was horrible. I knew it would be bad but wow I mean I expected more from a BMW considering with my M3 it would at least get out of the hole decent for the low torque.

Can't wait to race one from a light and beat it, hopefully, but soon after they will want to race from a roll but oh well. Still a phenomenal car by any means

why would someone use pictures of a car on ebay that has 32 miles while saying they have a M5 and not posting picture they took. come on if you have 90 grand for a M5 you can have 300 for a camera.

heh, yea, are they really particular??

as for more M5 times.... Derek's 116MPH traps show the M5 should be able to get low 12's as well..... I'm sure when he betters the launch, he'll break below a 2.0 60' and run a 12.2 - 12.4.....

not sure the M5 will do a 12 flat stock though...... which has been done in an E55....

the trap speed should be more indiciative of a car's true speed. it's understandable that the M5 is better at speed than from a launch because of its gearing and nature of the engine's powerband. the high revving n/a configuration and agressive gearing offsets the e55's launch advantage because of the torque (which also can be bad if spun too much) and the nature of the e55's powerband being supercharged with positive displacement supercharger (mounted on intake manifold allows for less than optimal cooling at times), the m5 is more of a competitor to the e55 on the top-end. the m5 should excel/accel best in top-end speed.

I am sure the times will come down. But keep in mind that it will only happen with launch control. Not really ideal in the real world because - 1. You can only use it so many times, 2. You need to go through menus/submenus to activate it (which you may not have time to do at a stoplight), and 3. You need to wait a certain period of time/drive a certain distance (4 km, I think) before you can use L/C again. I suspect that we will not see very many M5's at the strip. Hopefully, there will be many at road courses.

Is it just me, or does that BMW "launch control" thing suck? What is the point of that? It's not like that car is putting out 800 or 900lb/ft of torque that might cause harm to the drivetrain; and even if it did, so what, does BMW not have enough faith in their equipment to warranty a car that is driven hard?

When I pay >$90k for a car, I want to be able to have all the power I paid for all the time!!!

Say, what the heck happened in the last 300 ft. to the guy in the other lane? look @ that MPH? ...did he give up outta frustration, or blow-up?

Why do you think MB uses an auto tranny with ALL their 500 55 600 65 engines???

Exactly!

My 996 is a manual tranny 6spd, with 100% power on tap at all times, it has much more power than the BMW.

I think you missed my point! Your 996 (which sounds like a beautiful setup btw) has an upgraded clutch with all the heavy duty mods! correct??
It takes a tremendous toll on the clutch plates to launch a 4000 lb 500 hp car. A safer way of launching cars with the above specs is to use an auto tranny instead of a manual
