Passport SR7 display mount in ashtray?

Passport SR7 display mount in ashtray?
I want to mount an SR7 display where it cannot be seen - except when I want to see it. I recall somebody on board mounted it in the ashtray compartment - invisible with door shut. If you've done that, can you describe how you did it and please post a picture?
Any other ideas of a stealth mount? I know I have option of not using display and just use single led in dash -- but, I'd prefer full display if I can hide it.
Thanks

That would be me. It was the SRX head unit. I believe it is roughly the same size. I paid an installer to do it, so I have no idea how they did. I will take a picture this week (if I get out of the office before 10), or this weekend for you to see.

Etched rearview mirror. Best stealth mount and also very cool - you will get lots of envy with this. Check out this link from when I had mine done:

But it gets a 10/10 for coolness.

Enzom - appreciate offer of pix
While I agree the mirror is very cool, I don't know anybody in Chicago who can do it. Also, with the mirror, can you turn off the mirror display and just have the dash-imbedded led on? Ultimately, I may not want my passenger to know of radar - so w/ ashtray mount I can close ashtray, turn down volume, and just keep on on dash-imbedded led.
That is, of course if I can figure out how to do ashtray mount. So, Enzom appreciate pix when you can get to it.

All what they see at best is a red dot on your rear view mirror, similar to many aftermarket rear view mirrors that have a compass or temp display.

Here's how I did my V1 with the module in the ashtray.
V1 install
Not sure how your unit works, but getting the ashtray out is pretty easy. Open the door and pull up gently on the front edge of the trim piece surrounding the gear shift. With this out of the way, the whole ashtray assembly pops out. If I remember right, you pull up on the bottom edge. With the ashtray assembly in your hands, you just need to get you wire a wire from the dash into the back of the ashtray and you're set.

Door works just fine. But you should compare the specs on the two head units just to make sure that they are the same size (or that the SR7 head is smaller)

Thanks Enzom. Passport/Escort web site has them with the identical measurements for the display unit. I've also been told that SR7 + laser diffusers is identical in all respects to SRX except former is aftermarket and latter is dealer-installed.

The SRX is supposed to be sold through "authorized automotive dealers", like Porsche dealerships. But if you find a good installer, they should be able to get them for you. There was a guy on Z06Vette.com who was selling them for like $600 a while ago. I would think that there must be some difference somewhere. Otherwise, why have two different models? I can't figure it out, though.
As for the size of the head unit, I recalled that they were the same size. So it will fit. Good luck with the install.
