My E55 car weighed in today 4,025 and now down to 3,995

I had my car weighed today to see what the pig weighs. I had heard all sorts of stuff....the car weighing 3850 on my registration (yeah right), 4075-4250 in mags.

Well The car weighed in at 4,025 but right after that I purchased a light weight battery that reduced the weight by 30 more lbs to 3,995. I also don't have a spare tire. I think it's lighter than the E60 M5, lol.

Right Front - 1,077
Left Front - 1,113
Right Rear - 933
Left Rear - 903

(1/4 tank of gas)

Front - 54.4%
Rear - 45.5%

I have a 2003 w/o the pano roof and big 19 inch wheels. If I get the brake kit I can see getting the car down to 3,960...would be nice to get it down to 3,900 but not sure how to w/o screwing up the interior.

Has anyone else weighed their car?

Looks like 4,087 is the figure I find on the net.

http://www.theautochannel.com/newcar...s&trimid=14872 4,087 lbs

http://autos.yahoo.com/newcars/merce...ecs.html?p=all 4,087 lbs

http://www.canadiandriver.com/overvi...nz/e-class.php
3,990 lbs

http://motortrend.com/roadtests/luxu...mb/index7.html 4,100 lbs

I got the www.batterymart.com Oddesy PCJ 925. Didn't take but 5 minutes to put in. I had a 11lb PCJ 680 in my S4 but I didn't think it would be enough juice for the E55.

Each 100 lb drop in car weight is like 10 rwhp gain.

Given our traction limitations, it's a shame that there isn't an easy way (I can think of) to get some of the weight distribution moved towards the rear.

So, if I have this right, the quoted weights are pretty close to reality on a percentage basis ??? This is kinda a bummer for me, my experience with hacking around with 4.2 Audis is that they are actually lighter than quoted.

Guess I have to live with the knowledge that my CL is truly not "nimble and svelte" at its 4300 lb quoted weight.

An item I've been considering that you may have already thought about - although individually each piece is light, there is a lot of "stuff" in the trunk area for cosmetics that taken together might add up to benefits. The cover for the spare tire, covers for tail light access, cover on the trunk itself, etc. 'Course, this would be taking weight off the back in my case, but I figured I would go that route before the interior.

Oh, and I have a plethora of aero/brush guards that attach under the floor boards that could be removed if someone were really serious about quarter mile acceleration. They are so well integrated to the bottom of the car structure that it wasn't obvious to me that they were removable until I noted the bolt reliefs.

I'm not going to remove the guards on my car, but you may have something similar on the E55. They cover the fuel lines as well, so there is probably a good safety reason for keeping them on for daily commutes (although this is the first car I've had that has carried this guard thing to this extreme). They run the length between the wheels.

I did lighten up the trunk by about 50 lbs overall -- the battery and other things you mention. Like you said it won't help with traction but once rolling its better lighter. The only other thing I can think of is the EVO brake kit.

You can also lose 10-15 pounds by dieting lol

just kidding...

Try removing the stereo system..there are lighter speakers...I believe E class has 10-12 speakers(big heavy magnets). You can easly reduce 10 pounds from replacing the stock speakers with high quality lighter ones. Fiber glass hood is also something you may think about...some aftermarket fiberglass hoods are available for mbs. Backseats headrests are also about 10 pounds or more

Thanks for the tip on the speakers !!! And I completely and conveniently forgot about the whole "dieting" thing :-).

Can you provide a direct link to that battery? I couldn't find it. Also, is that battery lighter than the optima batter?

A gas of tank can fluctuate your weight by 60-80lbs so its important to note that, if you plan on comparing weights make sure u always do it with the same amount of tank in the gas (such as comparing with 50% in the tank or 25% in the tank each time u weigh the car). 4000 is pretty damn hefy though, much header than the old E55's which are around 3750lbs.

I had the 680 14lb battery on my S4...no problems...but others have had problems with that battery in the winter w/o driving the car at least every other day which is why I went with the 925.

My E55 weighed 4220lbs without driver at the local track. In comparison, my '02 Z06 weighed 3110lbs. The E55 has pano roof and had 3/4 tank of gas. This scale seems to be accurate as it is a new digital scale and it weighs me accurately also. Sorry to say that both cars above are sold.

Stephen04E55,

Why did you sell your E55? What did you replace it with?

i used the 14 lb odyssey battery as well in my BMW E36 M3. It was perfect, never had a single problem, i even let it sit sometimes for up to 4-5 days at a time and it was fine but anything over a week and it would lose its charge. For a daily driver those LTW batteries are actually perfect and they save about 30-40lbs, not a bad deal if you ask me.

Homey,

I totally agree. I was debating the P680 but though it might not provide enough juice for the E55. What do you think?

FYI -- stock battery weighs 53 lbs.

This one was 25 lbs.

I also took out the back rear lid which weights 6 lbs and now have even more trunk space. Groceries fit neatly in the new well and don't slide down. I do not think I will be putting it back in.

I replaced the E55 with the more cost effective and slower 300c SRT-8. I enjoy this new car in every respect vs the E55 except the straight line disadvantage. The SRT-8 would probably run 12.8-12.9....track times once they reopen in March.

Stephen04E55,

Nice car. What is the potential to mod that car? I have to image you can get it into the low 12s with the basics.

Erik,

Damn...thanks for showing me the link...

6lb kit on a stock 6.1L Hemi motor produces:
500 rear wheel horsepower & 507 rear wheel torque

For 6K you get 500rwhp...more than any E55 except for Derek's car...not bad for modern muscle. Its amazing that 6 psi provides 500 rwhp when we need to push 12-14 psi just to get to 485 rwhp. I guess its the 6.1L engine.

Don't know particulars on the kit, but it addition to the extra displacement it probably retains the stock 6.1 compression ratio, IMC several points higher than ours.

Is it using a centrifugal ??? A way back, there was a cool old Mustangs and Fast Fords article that discusses the benefits of systems like our Lysholms versus centrifugals from a standpoint of area under the torque curve. They basically tested several configurations on the dyno against a baseline.

The GS motorsports supercharger kit uses a centrifugal supercharger which has some "peaky" tendencies. The hp comes on mostly in the higher rpms...as the rpms build so does the boost. Unlike the Lysolm unit in the E55, this GS unit won't provide the low end grunt and because of the higher compression ratio, the boost is limited to approx 6psi. Even with 500 peak hp, the best I have seen any of these GS car run at the track is 12.0@114-115. That was the GS motorsports Magnum SRT-8 test car that ran the 12.0. As you guys know, our E55 have 11 sec potential off the showroom floor with about 400-420 rwhp because of the hp and torque area under the curve. I feel as if the SRT-8 300 will run 12.8-13.0 on a perfect air day and many on the SRT-8 forums have confirmed this. With drag radials, modified air intake, and cat back exhaust a 300 SRT-8 will probably run 12.3-12.4.

Wow, even given the top-end gains that a centrifugal tends to make, I'm kinda surprised that they are only running a 12.0 - still impressive!
