LSD: Whats the final word?

Thinking of installing the Kleeman LSD and don't want to waste the $$$$ for no real practical gain.

I know this topic has been However, there doesn't seem to be a clear cut answer. Does the installation of an LSD really make a difference on the street? Faster? Better handling?, etc.

No, installing an LSD does not increase horsepower output per se. However, it will keep your tyres from spinning as much as they are right now. With my winter tires, even at 2nd gear, if I go more than half throttle, my ESP will start to kick in (I have a stock car).

It will improve your launch at green lights, but it's more practical on the track or dragstrip

I do not have an LSD and everytime I turn off the traction control, the car leaves 2 identical tire tracks. I wonder why it does not leave just one. Any ideas?

because the right wheel is alot more power biased without an lsd than the left is, some MBs only lay one strip

So then why does their cars leave 2 black strips if there is no LSD?

That's a good question.

Very good question. Mine does it even in dyno mode. Sorta makes the LSD seem like a waste of money, huh?

Rotex,

I suggest a search on this subject, it has been discussed many times. The bottom line is: No one on this board has shown it will improve your 1/4 mile times, including me. Where it will likely help you is in driving transitions, like coming out of a corner hard. I would suggest this upgrade if you drive hard without ESP or if you have modified the power of your car.

That's a good question.
Open diffs, as everybody knows, put power down to whatever side that has the least resistance (least traction). However, if both sides have equal traction, there is no mechanism that causes the car to add more power to one side than another. Hence, if both sides have equal traction, then an open diff will add power to both sides. If one happens to be on some sand, then you'll most likely see 1 strip.

Also, once both wheels lose traction, it's much easier to keep them spinning - static friction is normally higher than dynamic friction. So, once both wheels initially lose traction, the car will then sense little traction from both sides, and will continue to apply force to both sides.

In different/variable surfaces, LSD will help greatly. Anything, such as small bump that one side experiences can result in a single-strip.

I had the Kleemann LSD installed i my SL55, and although it aint an E55, expirience schould be more or less the same.

I defenetly think it is an advantage. The car has better everyday performance, it handles better with ESP off, ( more driving fun ) and the distribution of the power to each wheel is more even. The car is going more straight when accelerating, but even the LSD can´t prevent it from going sideway´s ( broadsiding ) when throthle is fully opened. As an ex rally driver, i would not leave home without it.

Lets put it this way, if you are driving your car hard, you will love it. If you are driving nice and carm, waste of money.

Take a look at these figures :
