How does temp affect drag racing times?

I went to the strip today. Second time with my 01 e55. Last time the temp was about 60F. Best 13.83. Today temp was 44F. Best 13.7. I had a Kleemann ECU upgrade over the winter and was hoping for a little bit better. Someone at the track who said he was out there alot said people were about 1/2 second slower today because of the cold weather. He said the track needs to warm up to get the best times. I thought the colder the better for air flow to the engine. Which is correct?

Cold air is better for the engine, but worse for the tires.

Cold air is more oxygen rich - so it burns better when mixed with fuel in your engine... allowing for greater performance.

But it's not good though when the track is cold, that means less traction.

That's why you give them tires a little roast.

Ok so should I have smoked the tires? I have always drove around the water. Does heating up street tires help or hurt? I thought I heard that for street tires it wasn't that good. I have Pirelli Neros. I watched the video of me running and I seemed to spin the tires off the line a little more than I heard when I was in the car (mercedes for ya!) so maybe I could get a little more traction. What do you think a W210 E55 should get in the first 60 ft? I was 2.2 sec. My best was 2.14.

I don't think heating up anything but R-Compounds actually does a difference.

What was your trap speed? Trap speed is a good indicator of HP.

104.5. A few mph better than before K&N and ECU upgrade.

the major contributors to your ETA will be....

1)elevation of the track

2) reaction time

3) traction

4) temp

5) weight

of course you the list can go on an on... like tire pressure, milage, wind, humidity, condition of the track ect.. ect

I would say that the cold temps actually helped you pick up speed. Heating up the tires is not really necessary unless you are running drags. It will help to roast them, but it won't be much of a big difference.

what was your reaction time?

I thought reaction time didn't matter since it is the time you cross the "line" at the start to the finish line. Doesn't matter how long you sit on the line. Am I wrong?

You are correct. Your reaction time has nothing to do with ET. The timing doesn't start until you move.

Seems a little slow. My '02 ran 13.3-13.5 stock carrying an extra 100 lbs of stereo gear etc. That was at 80 degrees. Heat the rear tires (especially when it's cold outside) and drop the pressure to 20 psi. Leave the fronts at 35-40. Power brake up to about 1800 and hammer it with ESP off. That should get your 60' time, and ET down a little more unless you go up in smoke, then DR's will be needed for your best time.

Yeah, Maybe a little slow. Fast for me, but... Anyone with ideas as to what it could be other than a 47,000 car?
