Sl55 510hp/531tq
I just happened to be looking at the Mercedes North America web site (MBUSA.com) and saw that they have a 2007 SL55 (not SL63). I also noticed that it has a higher horsepower and torque rating than the current 55 motors. Anyone have any idea why it is not a SL63 and also why the additional power? I want 510HP and 531TQ too!

The additional power is due to a slight re-working of the engine:
The improved AMG 5.5-litre V8 supercharged engine at the heart of the SL 55 AMG is equipped with a new, higher-speed supercharger compressor and a larger throttle valve to optimise the fresh-air supply. These modifications plus the installation of an even more efficient engine management unit have boosted the output of the AMG V8 powerplant from 368 kW/500 hp to 380 kW/517 hp, while the peak torque has been increased from 700 to 720 Nm. The electronic engine management now features cylinder-selective pilot control of the firing angle: this function sets the optimum combustion point individually for each cylinder, resulting in a further improvement in the efficiency of the AMG V8 engine. The new SL 55 AMG accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds (outgoing model: 4.7 seconds) and goes on to reach an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

These 55 motors are so easy to mod ... and get more power out of them.
How many K2+ kleeman failures have there been ?
Any thoughts of how we can get these improvements incorporated into the E55?
Seems like a slightly bigger pulley, some fancy software, throttle body (which we can get anyway). The interstnig bit is the selective cylinder timing ... maybe some new hardware involved - although it could be only software.
No chance they release the E with these mods as again it will be quicker than the SL55 - so we have to go back door!!
Rgds Steve.

stevebez - You hit the nail on the head! This is a tremendous improvement in the existing 55K Motor's ignition system! However, it would have to be Hardware oriented as well as Software oriented because of the additional sensors needed to monitor each cylinder separately.
Wonder what this ignition system's parts would cost?

Take a look at this tread:

No new hardware here - just programming.
This is MB's adaptation of technology that's been around for many years. It's not intended to add HP, but rather, to lose less. It's tied into the detonation sensing network. Before this mod, when spark knock was detected, timing was removed uniformly from all cylinders. Now when knock is detected, timing is removed only from the offending cylinder(s). So the remaining cylinders stay at full power (so to speak). The so-called power increases would not only be difficult to measure, but would be inconsistent as well. They would have to put the engine on a dyno and induce a controlled amount of detonation - not easy to do consistently.
With a properly tuned car and the appropriate grade of gas, I doubt that there would be any power increase. The MB verbiage is probably marketing hype to help justify price increases to the public.

I think that my travel plan at this point is still to do the Canadian GP and the USGP (in July?) off of the yacht in the Great Lakes....
Keep me updated on your planning through PM's....
