Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 vs PS2s
About to by new tires....anyone know how the goodyears compare to the PS2s on the E. I read on car and driver that the goodyears are better...any opinions? Is it worth the extra money?
going to put 245/40 on the fronts and 275/35 on the rear on stock rims
car and driver report :

I used GS-D3's as replacement on my 03, liked them better than the contis. Seemed stickier & quieter. Now on my 06 I have PS2's. Much better feel than contis or goodyears but I also went up to 19's, that might have something to do with the quicker response. Anyway very happy with the PS2's so I will use them again, in fact will also change to them on my M3.
Just my opinion.
Good luck on your adventure.

i was running the Goodyear F1's on my last E class which were 19's.. They looked very good on the rims but started to get very loud after about 8-10k miles...
i have the PS2's on my E55 now and feels much smoother and tighter at times.. the only thing that i have now is the shimmy issue which hopefully the techs can figure out with my service appointment tomorrow.
PS2's are better towards the summer not sure how they would hold up in the rain though. good luck!!! i would stay with the PS2's..

I have had the opportunity to use both PS2s and GS-D3s. In all, PS2's lower treadwear (220 vs 280) rides quieter, and corners better in the dry season. However, GS-D3's tread pattern provides a much more secure feeling between a wet road and the steering wheel. Tough choice here in Northern California.

I used PS2's on my 911TT for 9,000 miles. Still had probably 25% tread left, I was pleased with that.
Very quiet and plenty sticky. No problem in the rain ... of course the car has AWD, that might help.
I wanted to try the Goodyears but they were on national backorder at the time.
Now, I wouldn't switch unless there was a 30 or 40% price advantage to the Goodyears.

I've used the GS-D3's on my 545, and have the PS2's on my M5, and I'd definitely go with the PS2's. The Goodyear's were great new, but at the start of my second season of summer setup, they got very noisy. I've got almost 15,000 miles of VERY hard driving on the PS2's, and I have a good 5,000 miles left on the rears. The fronts will be good for probably twice that. The ride comfort and noise is better than the stock Conti's, and the handling feel is the best I've experienced. They're pricey, but worth it.

I didn't care for the GS-D3's either. They were extremely noisy over uneven road surfaces and got worse with mileage. I would not buy those tires again. All in all, I was completely underwhelmed by the GS-D3's.

Go with the PS2s or Bridgestone RE 050 A
I also tried out the Goodyears and can confirm the noisyness. In addition to that, they wore off pretty fast and wore unevenly, developing a rotational pull. Goodyear saw no problem in that. I would not recommend them unless the primary driving condition you have is a wet road.

SL 65 AMG and E63s AMG
I'm replacing my PS2s on my E55 as we speak. I got 25k miles on the fronts and 15k on the rears. If they would have been correctly aligned I would have easily gotten 28+K on the fronts.
Goodyears that I have used on my previous vehicles always got hard and noisy after 10k mi.
As a blanket statement I prefer Michelin over everthing else b/o comfort, quietness, grip, and ease of balance. They may lose out to others when brand new but after a few thousand miles they tend to continue to perform like new when the others are spent.

'06 E55, '05 SLK55, a few others
The GS-D3's weren't that bad on my blown E430. I haven't tried a tire yet that didn't get noisy with time. The original Pilots were the worst, the Goodyears a little better, the PS2's better still. I wouldn't go back to the Eagles on the '06 E55 because it's never out in bad weather, but if you drive in rain much, nothing I've tried was better than the Goodyears.

I tested the F1's before choosing the PS2's for both the Noble and the E in the One Lap. The F1's were superior in terms or durability and consistency. After 3-4 laps, the PS2's are slick as butter and wear faster but during those first 3-4 laps, they were a tad superior in terms of dry traction.
In the 20 months I have owned the E55, I have gone through 7 sets of rear PS2's, Tirerack loves me. After burning off the last set during the One Lap, I put the F1's on there for durability. We'll see.

I love it: a new set of tires every 2.86 months!!! Gotta love that torque.

It sounds like you have an alignment problem (have you lowered the car?) or your tire pressure is too low, or the E55 is a heck of a lot harder on the rear tires than the M5. I'll assume you're not just smoking the tires for no reason. If you're running a very agressive camber on the rears you could wear them pretty quick.

I have done 40 or more launches and probably 20 quarter mile runs.

its a clk55 not the e55, its lighter than your car

You can check out the PS2 and GS-D3 reviews on the Tirerack website:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/survey...ay.jsp?type=MP
Both are excellent in terms of treadwear - 2nd and 3rd out of 23 tires. If you read the individual reviews, they will tell you a lot.

there was a period of time when i was driving my moms s430 (returned, it was a lease), it had stock 225 or 235 16's on it.
i used to drive home from school during rush hour over coldwater canyon, going into the city from the valley, the opposite lane (into the valley) was always packed. i remember on several occasions it was raining and i would slide on every corner (the s class is very easy to slide) and the look on the drivers of the cars stuck in traffic in the opposite lane was priceless
