Question Engine oil leak

I did the car regular service for my stock ’05 e55 at 15k km at MB garage . Later when I checked the engine oil level check at 18K km, the oil level was down by 1.5 liters. I also noticed a black deposit in all of the tail pipes. I believe this is clear sign of an internal leak since there was no apparent external leak.

I phoned a chief MB mechanics. He told me that a maximum of 0.8 liters lost engine oil for every 1000 km is normal for regular E class and this could be more for an AMG! Will you buy this? He said that the black deposit in the tail pipes is normal as well!!!!

Being new to the MB world, I found this very strange . What do you guys think?

The black deposit in the tail pipes indicates a rich fuel mixture, which these cars have at WOT. If you're burning oil, you will see a blueish-colored smoke during hard acceleration and/or deccelaration.

Black deposits are better than white deposits in your exhaust... rich versus lean... and rich is preferrable any day of the week over lean, especially in our cars. And I'd bet most 55s on here have tons of this at the ends of their exhaust pipes... we should have a poll... it would be close to 100%. God knows mine does. So no worries there unless you ALSO see smoke. Not first thing in the morning condensation... but actual smoke long after it has warmed and running. White=water most of the time, Blue/gray = oil.

The only thing I'd worry about is the drop in the oil level. A liter per 1000k makes zero sense. Wayyyy too much. That can't be right... right???

There in no oil stick in the engine. so I have to rely on the car electronic check displayed in the speedometer.

I went to the MB garage. They started an oil leak test as follows:

They drained the old oil
Put new oil and filter
Started the engine and monitored the oil temperature through the star diagnosis till it reached 80°C
Switched off the engine and waited for 5 min
Took oil level reading using a special stick.

They asked me to drive for 1000 km and return to them. They are going take an oil level reading at the same oil temperature. They will then be able to tell if there is any leak. I will try to reach the 1000 Km in a week or so.

But the guy is still insisting on the 0.8 liter/ 1000 Km normal oil loss. Another Mb mechanics told me that the normal is 0.3 to 0.4 liter /1000 Km instead.

There was no smoke at all. With WOT, you mean “wide open throttle”, am I right?
Thank you

Whichversion did you use the simple one or the more detailed where it tells you the exact amount of oil remaning vs. oil neede?

Yup - it's an affliction owners of this car seem to develop soon after purchase . . .

First turn key to position 1, then rapidly push the instrument cluster reset button 3x's, you wil see some info displaved, use the arrow buttons on the streeing wheel to scroll to oil level, then turn the key to postion2 (ign on) and wait for the number of quarts. I was told by my tech that this # will be low by about .8 of a quart due to the multi level oil pan in the e55. This method will give you other info on your car plus get you into dyno mode etc.

if you see the manual (page 287) it reads" "depending on how it is driven, the vehicle consumes a maximum of 0.8 liters per1000 km"

Or, you may easily go to the online manual at

http://www4.mercedes-benz.com/e/cars...n/betrieb.html

click on operation then go to page 7. Isn't that wonderful !!

How it's driven (meant hard) and it also says if it's new. I would hope a broken in E55 that is driven normally would not use that much oil...

After it's broken in, it should use almost no oil.
