Is it true that US models will not be 476hp it will have 468 hp?

I don't know if its a fact but i do know that the original spec on the SL55 had 476hp, but they found the W211 E55 to be more aerodynamic and therefore would be essentially faster than the SL55, so they boosted the SL55 to 500hp. I think the standard supercharged V-8 will have 476 hp, and that IMO is plently for the new E55.

It doesn't matter...
As long as it is the same engine as the SL55, it is only a matter of time before someone figures out where they hid the extra 24+hp.
I can chip my MINI S (go cart) and get an extra 20-30 hp, add a new exhaust and find 5-15 more, and then there's the pulley and pressure tweaking in the SC, air filters and so on...and I'm only starting with 165 hp.
We should easily find a way to get a 10% improvement in HP from the new E55k and have 500+ HP.

MBUSA list the 2003 SL55 as 493HP. I believe that 500HP figure is the Euro DIN measurment and the 493 is US SAE.
I suspect that all 5.4 liter AMG Supercharged engines will be the same and that the E-Class losses horsepower by way of the marketing division or perhaps the electronics. MBZ advertises the E55 horsepower as lower so that buyers of SL55, S55 and CL55 feel good about spending well over $100k and not having same HP as a much cheaper E-Class. Just speculation.

I think you're right, Kev. IMHO, it would more of a pain in the *** for MBZ to dual spec the H.P rather than print a feel good number in the SL's brochure. Dyno #'s would vary enough to keep the *****ing and whining at bay. Even with the "additional" horsepower, it remains to be seen if the SL will yield better acceleration numbers than the much lighter E.

I heard from the owner of an early delivery SL55 that his registration papers were updated in Europe to reflect increased HP with no work being done. Basically MB was saying that the average power output of the engine was higher than originally stated. As far as i am aware there was NO change made to 476HP SL55 to update to 493HP.

Here is a copy of the post I made yesterday on the SL 55 thread
addressing this subject:
I just read something interesting...regarding the horsepower rating on the SL 55 which confirms what I had been told...(that the 55 always had over 500HP) Apparently the different figures had to do with Cetification of Specification...that you have to certify a maximum achievable production specification...and AMG opted to certify the engine at a lower number (for 2002) and then after further testing and production have now recertified the engine at 500HP for 2003.
Here is the Altavista translation from the German:
55 AMG, change of certifying The engine performance of the SL55 AMG became during the type testing in accordance with 80/1269/EWG i.d.F. 1999/99/EG with 350 KW with 6100 min-1 certifies. With this indication it should be guaranteed that in series production this achievement with security is not fallen below. Engine performance measurements in the context of the prescribed product monitoring (Conformity OF Production/copilot) resulted in that the achievement of the engines lies in the upper tolerance field permissible for series production. For this reason we decided to certify performance data again. For vehicles model year ago 2003 (code 802, production to including 3. Decade May 2002) exists the possibility of changing the achievement data in the registration papers of 350 KW (476 HP) on 368 KW (500 HP). New system permission for the SL55 AMG, which are at present provided, offers the basis for it. Thus the possibility is created of obtaining a correction of the indication of achievement in the registration papers. The SL 55 AMG starting from model year 2003 (code 803, production starting from 1.Dekade June 2002) is certified with an output of 368 KW (500 HP) in the registration papers.
So it very well could be that the E55 will have 500HP without modification!

jco-amg, these numbers look about right according to a the US AMG representative(Antje Williams) that I spoke with at the AMG Challenge at Summit Point.
I asked her about the hp in the SL55 since a friend has one and will be doing track events with/againist me. She said 500 hp. I asked DIN or SAE? DIN. SAE will be about 493. What will the new E55 produce. Right around 450hp(476 DIN is about 453 SAE hp). This is mostly likely to intake or exhaust restrictions. The dealer fired up a SL55 in the bay and it was quite loud. I don't think most E55 owners will want it this loud.
Considering the SL55 weighs in about 4300 lbs. and the new E55 will probably squeak in around 3600-3700 lbs. they will be very close in performance. After riding in SL500 at IRP this past weekend it is definitely under-tired for it's weight. I give the performance edge to the E55 in the twisties.
Besides any performance stuff like pulleys and such will have more of an effect on the E55 as opposed to the SL55 due to weight.

Ah, ...It's UGLY! It looks too downstream...Too "C"ish. I don't like it. It looks cheaper than the outgoing"210". The sides look "pushed in". The rear end looks like Hell...And the head lights! WTF did they do to the headlights!!! Less horsepower than the SL??! WTF??!! LESS is for PUSSIES!!!! What a rip!!! ( In the spirit of the "209" debate...)
P.S. DAMN... I'm gonna get me one of these.
