2000 W210 E55->2003 R230 SL500->2004 W211 E55->2007 997TT+2007 E63->2010 GLK350->2012 E550 4matic
How much is the M6 nowadays? I rather pay a little more and get the 997TT.

Well to cut all BS...

We have raced M5 and M6 here with stock E55K in 1/4 and rolling starts 40-120...E55 WON ....on regular roads...

M5 only started to pull on E55K after 130-135...

In other 1/4 race Kleemann 210 E55 560 HP has lost to M6 one hood...

Thats precisely what Loren references.....walking away is not going to happen. A hood length is a win. But it's not walking away...even an 11 second car does not walk away from a 12 second car...at the end of the quarter mile its a pretty small lead.

Yes...it's 2000 210 E55 with Kleemann S/C...

Long time ago I raced him my old M5 and lost like 2-3 car lenghts with E39 M5 in 1/4....

The owner was saying on dyno it makes 543 HP at the crank...

This season he is saying that now it makes around 560 HP

When I raced his Kleemann E55, his driver was driving, cause he was too drunk

So I really dont think that the owner will know what he has...He said Kleemann S/C previously...didnt asked more...

My mum as a M6 and I can tell you it goes. I would bet more on the M6 than on any 55k mercedes stock.
If you speak about non stock they also can make some changes

Man...why does your mom drives M6

She should drive your 320 GDI or G-Wagen and you should drive M6 be a man

I was thinking the same thing. Nice car but I agree, it needs to come off the stilts.

Bob,

Are you referring to a low 12's vs a high 11's car? If so, I agree. But if you're talking a full second difference, then, at 110 - 120 mph trap speed, we're looking at a 50 - 60 yard gap at the line. That's a huge lead.

You're right Grump, the full second will be a pretty large gap down track. I think in the context of this thread, these 2 cars aren't walking away a full second from each other. They sound much closer than that.

No personal offence meant to anyone, but those two comments are embarrassing. Those must rank as two of the poorest and most defensive comments made in support of a car.

I hope the latter was joking, but the first comment seems to have been made in all seriousness. Next time I want to feel like I'm floating on air at 100MPH, I'll hand a fiver to the Lincoln Town Car driver whose cars are a glorified taxi service here. And of course I'll worry about the baby sleeping in the backseat next time I'm shopping for a performance car easily capable of 100MPH+ speeds.

Sir, how often do you do 100MPH when you have a baby sleeping in the backseat?

Stop worrying about tenths of a second on competitors' reported 1/4 times, trap speeds, etc. Be a man, an E55 is nothing to be defensive about. Enjoy it. And leave the babies and 17-year old girls out of it.

2005 Brilliant Silver E55
This debate still goes on and on and on...

Having owned a E55 and raced an E55 in my M5, no M5s are going to win off the line (isn't this a no brainer?). From a roll it's much different but sooooooooooooooooooo many factors play a role so it's really hard to say who's really faster to a designated point.

Fikse, the key difference between a 55K motor and the M's V10 is that the 55K motor pulls strong and starts dipping down in power before redline and the V10, while it lacks torque the power band goes all the way up to redline (both seen on dynos)

I just got the M6 and it's really hard to tell right now if there are any differences between the M5 and M6. If the M6 truly traps at 121MPH, I would have to assume that BMW did something a tad different on the M6 vs the M5.

At Capitol Raceway, MD my M5 trapped 118 with a crappy 60 foot. I agree that the 60 foot time will only help the ET and not increas the trap speed.
At that same track, I have not seen any stock E55's trap higher than 114-115 but they all had great 60 times. My Renntech Stage 1 trapped 117 at that track. K2's were pulling in GREAT traps 121+ so I know the K2's are strong cars.

As for the Launch Control, Clarkson really blew that out of proportion. You can program the M button on the steering wheel to P500 Sport, S6, EDC Sport and you're done so if you're ever in a street comfrontation all you do is hit the button to achieve best optimal settings.

US Based LC is a joke at the track, since there is so much sticky compound. On the streets, the LC is worthless because the car just spins too much tires.

One thing I've learned on the streets is that real world performance doesn't come from track ET's, since the streets don't have that sticky stuff so any powerful cars really won't be able to launch very hard in "real life". Heck, I got my *** kicked from a standing run by a stock Audi S4 when I was in my K2 CL55K with LSD but I know I would have whooped him at the track.

I think the E63 motor will have same characteristics as the M's V10, with the power band going up and not dipping down before redline.

Really 2 different cars, apples and oranges really. Both have their strengths and weaknesses.

Enjoy and be safe on the roads.

YAH THINK? Jesus... what in the world do you think the "HEHE" after my statement meant?

I was merely referring to the notion the the M6 has a rather complex variety of configurations, which two editors in the article that began this thread noted:

"DAVE VANDERWERP
How’s this for choice? The M6 offers 279 possible combinations of electronic adjustments (none of which yields an acceptably smooth automatic mode). These include 11 transmission settings as well as a trio of options each for the suspension, stability control, and engine. Who needs this? Ferrari is much smarter on its F430 with a five-position switch that simultaneously varies the transmission, suspension, and stability-control settings from a street-friendly setup to an all-out track mode. The mechanically similar M5 offers the same confusing setup as the M6, but for 15 grand less, maybe you could hire someone to help you figure it out.

TONY QUIROGA
Is it too much to ask that this $100,000 M6 equipped with the sequential manual gearbox not make me look like a freshly licensed 16-year-old learning how to drive a stick? I’ll concede that if you break the habit of leaving your foot on the accelerator between shifts — as you would in a normal automatic — and lift off the throttle completely between gears — as you would in a traditional manual — the jerkiness lessens. But shouldn’t the M6, the technological marvel of BMW’s line, be smart enough to dial back the throttle by itself? And where’s the launch control? It’s one of the SMG’s only redeeming capabilities, and we don’t get it in America? I don’t get it."

So you see, I was pointing out that if two 17 year old girls were to race, which I'm not encouraging, the E55 girl would likely win because the M6 girl would still be trying to figure out what the hell to do unless she programmed her M button according to her preferred race settings... and we know all 17 year old girls are doing that before anything else when they get the car, right? This of course was a reference to the previous post and said lucky 17 year old girlfriend getting said M6. It was also a way of pointing out that as I already mentioned, no one is walking away from anyone here for no other reason than out of the box, at a random stop light on a deserted road, Mr. or Mrs. M6 had better already have his/her best settings programmed when the light turns green, as the E55 is ALWAYS ready. And even then, the E55 will take the lead out of the hole and win in most every street race to normal speeds.... eg, not 120.

Trivia: As the article noted, Mr. Quiroga noted he felt like a freshly licensed 16 year old, so maybe you should write a letter to car and driver complaining of the age reference as well! HAHA.

As for a baby in the backseat... good lord he's wasn't being literal! Of course he meant BABIES, not "Baby"... he has three, and they always travel together. Glad I could clear that one up for yah.

My mummy is cool, She doesn't drive much and I told her to take the M6, so when i go visiting

I do a too much kilometers to drive a gasoline car it would be ridiculous
let me give you an example:
Last week-end i went visiting a friend and took the CLS I didn't even consummed 1/4 of the tank (70€ to fill up when empty)
last month i went their with the G55k and I filled up the car when I left and had to stop on the way back to fill it up again (120€)

Ok the G55 goes a little faster than my CLS 320cdi but you have to make choice
