Why is there no yellow and or redline on our tach's? I know the limiter will prevent over-reving but in manual mode its nice to have a visual easy to see reference point just before it hits. I guess I'm missing something

Mercedes thinks AMG owners usually possess unique and elite driving skills, and can therefore know the exact place in the powerband where peak horsepower comes out. Thus, these German engineers found it precisely necessary to eliminate the use of a redline.
Either that, or they just want you to over rev it, break it, and take it in for $5000 repairs.
Just kidding.

its automatic, why u need to see the redline?
Out Of Control!!
the limiter over-revs some, especially if you pump it up!! That is how some guys get about 161mph out of it.

i realize that, but i don't see why anyone wants to be in "manual" mode for a car like this.Originally Posted by RJC

i have lots of experience with BMW SMG and Ferrari F1 system, and i love it.
but manual shifting on a full-auto car is totally lame. the 2 sec lag/delay when u upshift is a joke. benz has a good auto tranny, just let it do the work, it will work better than u shift it manually.

First, being new to the forum, want to say hi to everyone
I have an '06 and there is a redline mark at 6400 rpm eventhough it is a little difficult to see.

Welcome, and you're absolutely right. My '05 is also redlined at 6400.Originally Posted by W211E55

How 'bout some pics of your ride?

I have only had bad experiences using manual mode. Hitting limiter in 1st gear (twice now) thinking I was in sport mode...
Also the gear change takes foreeeeeevvvvveeeeerrrrrrr, just leave the tranny in sport to sort out the upshifts and use the button for downshifts ... will save the tranny and you will love your E.

I agree with Steve this has been exactly how I decided to use the box. I do like having some engine breaking and being in control of downshifts (I at least can see and anticipate when I need to grab a lower gear - whereas the box can only guess from control inputs). The new 7 Speed (felt) much faster to shift and frankly more fun, when I "had a go" in last years AMG challange cars. I still wonder what the 63 will be like to drive, but I didn't see the value in another challange so close to the last, and being a little expense IMHO, especially with so many people there (= less car time)Originally Posted by stevebez

Anyway back on topic...use what Steve suggests and enjoy it in relative safety...

On my '06 the hash marks are red from 6400 on up. It is tough to see for sure.

Took a closer look, yup they're there, but if it takes that hard of a look too see it's not very good. A solid thick line of red from 6400 to 7000 would be much better. Doesn't BMW put small colored LEd's in their M tachs?
