What the new German E63 owners are saying...
If you did not read my thread about Renntech and my time spent with it's President you missed some of his comments which I posted; according to him the Germans that have taken delivery that previously owned a 55, are wishing they kept their 55's as the low and mid range is simply not there compared to the 55, in addition the new engine starts to really come alive at the very upper rpms and just when it does the transmission has to shift causing the power to drop off again. Very encouraging news from the "Fatherland".

If they previously had a 55, a quick 20 minute test drive in the 63 would have given them a good idea of what to expect.
Anyway, he said she said.........I'll wait to hear what multiple U.S. publications have to say (in due time).

I don't know if they tested the cars before they signed as these cars may have been ordered well before any were available for testing. Also I doubt even with a test drive one would start redlining a new car they're about to pay close to $100,000 for with only delivery miles on it...a dealer demo yes, their own car no.

Agreed, a test drive will not reveal everything there is about the performance aspects of a vehicle. On the other hand though, you don't really have to redline the crap out of a car to realize if it doesn't have the grunt of a previous vehicle you've had for several years (especially in the low range).
If its really THAT much of a difference (of which many here seem to believe it will be), it should be fairly clear after a descent test drive.

AMG technology gives us more hp, an efficient 7-speed transmission with probably the same or higher mpg, and a limitation on mods. Coupled with a pointy bumper with some side louvers and some new taillights, I wouldn’t be trading my 55 for the 63 anytime soon.

looks like Adam @ Kronen Tuning is departing. was going to use him & the shop for slight mod (RENNtech) work in the next month or so. seemed like very good guy and helpful. anyone know any other San Fran shops that do tuning and are good/trustworthy? thanks all...

When all transmissions shift (not including CVT), the engine is pulled down to a lower-power region of the HP curve - it's the nature of the beast. It's what allows the car to continue accelerating.
WRT the low-range torque comment, all one has to do is look at the torque curve before driving the car to realize that torque similar to the E55 is not there. They didn't need to buy the car first. But this issue is also easily addressed. The E63 would be a prime candidate for a torque converter that has a stall speed in the 2500-3000 RPM range. This would make it a point & shoot 1/4 miler - good dig and top-end pull. And probably w/o ESP intervention.
You guys need to wait for more data before condemning this ride.

Either way well soon see more info....
The car has less torque (as said you can see that on paper), so I wouldn't be shocked if it didn't have the push back in your seat feel that the E55 has. Overall though (stock vs. stock), I would think the E63 will be slightly faster. This being based off the fact that I've never heard of an AMG Benz getting slower with each updated or new model.

The 55k motor is a classic, a real beast. With some mods it is just unbelievable. My Renntech stage 5 mods are giving 478 rwhp, 540 rwtq on a Dynomatics yet I'm still getting 15-17mpg in everyday driving in the C mode. When I drive more aggressively in the S or M mode, I still get about 14 mpg.
From what I've read and based on the MB / AMG specs, the 6.3 engine gets slightly worse fuel economy (expected since it has larger displacement and the smaller 55k engine shuts down S/C when not needed). Although the published specs show the 63 a little faster 0-60, I don't believe it! I've driven a few cars with the 7sp (S550 & GL450) and had concerns about it -- spacing of the top three gears seemed less than ideal and there was too much gear searching driving on a local freeway up to 80 mph. It also seemed to start off in 2nd gear too, at least on the GL450 which didn't have C/S settings. For my driving style the 5sp is money, it always downshifts 1-2 gears when needed and upshifts just at the right time, not to soon or too late.
I look forward to driving a 63 once they start showing up here in the USA. Rumor I heard is that they are at the port but to my knowledge there are no cars at the stealers yet.

Well, another possibility (maybe a little conspiracy theory here) is that I would expect Renntech to tell you "people in Germany" prefer the 55 better. Of course they would if the new car has very little tuning capabilities. Like I said, just a theory.

I'm an adult. It's my money, it's my car.
I will get one and decide for myself whether or not the new E63 works for me - or not.
I think that it will be a great package.
Does it need to be compared to the 'old' E55? Only if one has to sell or trade in one's E55 to obtain a new E63. I really don't see much more validity to this whole discussion or argument past that one, distinct, circumstance - all the rest is 'much ado about nothing' IMHO....

It was also brought to my attention that my car is on the Sevas wheels website in their gallery. They apparently stole the pics from the Eurowerkz website and wont reply to any emails I send them!
Heres a short clip my friend took from his M3 a while back:

I'll have one in a few weeks. It'll be on the same dyno as my 55 and then on the track VERY soon thereafter. If it doesn't work out, I'll sell it. Until then (by someone here in the US), it's all speculation.
