Run-in with a 6.3 this morning...

On my way to work this morning I ran into a CLK63. We raced from a red light with absolutely nobody in front on us. Believe it or not, he gets me off the line!!!! That thing hooked up like a AWD 911. I see that thing in front of me as it quickly shifts through gears (that 7 sp. tranny must be pretty sweet). As you probably already guessed, I made the mistake of taking off TC. My tires spun like crazy and he has me by about 2-3 car lengths. I back off the throttle and soon as I secure traction I start pulling on him. By about 90mph I had him by ~ 3 cars and we both shut it down. I guess that's not too bad considering I didn't have any traction . In any event, we get to the next light, both roll down our windows and he gives me the thumbs up and I do the same. All in all, I was impressed. Those 63's have no tire spin... they launch great and I think that 7sp. tranny really helps them.

Did you go for round 2 with TC on? That would've been more interesting to see what the results were. Good run though!

Sweet. Remember the CLK 63 is down on power compared to the E63 but weighs quite a bit less so the CLK 63 should be pretty close to the E63 in acceleration

See, this is what I am talking about. Benz needs to work on the internet marketing like BMW. If they posted some honest races of the E55 launching against the E63 and the 63 pulling it or even hanging with it, you would have had MANY many more guys trading for the 63. The Gustav M5 pre vehicle launch internet vids were nothing more than genius marketing.

Instead we are all sitting here waiting for Derek to get done street racing on an interstate to actually see what this car will do.

Thanks SO MUCH for the post Dragon!! Look forward to many more posts and vids. New 6.3 sounds pretty darn nice. Hey, my Benz dealer says they got word that some guy in Vegas with a 55 is gonna try the SLR intercoolers. Instantly I am like, "Dragon!!!". It's you right?

Dealers are scary hooked up together, it's like the mob.

Nice Kill! Wonder how different the results would have been against a stock E55. Either way, having driven the CLS 63, I think the 63's are faster than most would believe. They just deliver the speed in a different way. And I think the CLK Cab does weigh about the same as the E class cars, so the weight shouldnt be too much of a factor.

Good run... Wonder what you would do if you lost to him? Trade your car in for an E63?

For what it is worth, Mercedes' performance quote on their website lists the CLK63 as doing 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. They list the E63 at 4.3 seconds.

When I get in my E55, I...

- buckle my seatbelt
- press start button
- turn off ESP

... every time. Rain or shine

In addition to Derek's run, 2 weeks later we'll have a whole day of drag results of an E63 to compare to 2 stock E55s... and 2 E55Ks... and an M5... and an M6... and a CLS55...

So, a complete and total overview of the models will finally be on the table for all to see... who knows what effect that will have on the overall perception of the cars...

If I'm about to run someone from a dead stop, ESP is on..... especially on the street... your chances of nailing the launch with ESP off, on the street, are tough, and you'll probably only get one chance.....

It's about 50 / 50 . Sometimes I can nail the launch with TC off by slowly depressing the throttle and feathering it and sometimes I get too aggressive (like this morning). If I nail the launch w/ TC off I can really punish my opponent. Leaving TC coupled with the fact the we have auto tranny's just no fun... I like the challenge. Not too mention, w/ TC on my car drags forever.... ESP don't shut off till about 40mph.

Based on this race, I've got to hand it to the new 63's. I think that new 7 sp. tranny is solid. I could hear that CLK63 shifting through those gears. Too bad the power rating is so low on those tranny's... slapping on a Kleemann charger to one of those 63's would be sick!

I agree on the ESP frustration to 40mph or so... Its like the car is struggling the whole time to become its true self. So, I assume you'll try some runs with and without ESP on at the strip. How interesting will it be to run the DRs on the car with no ESP... hmmm... have you ever done that before?

Being that we have ALL DAY (hehe) I will be trying everything. I ran my C55K S7 w/ the MT drag radials with TC off and floored it... hooked up quite well and I had my best 60' that way. Drag radials really bite. Honestly our best launch should come w/ TC off and the Drag Radials on (should yield the best 60')... whether or not that will happen remains to be seen. It's all a matter of execution.

Ah yes, but he's an admin with apparently an airstrip near him.

Just play with pressures and burnout techniques if you have a private track day. You should be in the really low 1.7x or 1.6x rang with drag radials and the power that your cars makes.

I've run in the high 1.7s with my stock Contis and just got a set of Nitto 555R drag radials that I'll be fitting before our track day on Sept 18. I hope to be in the low 1.7s, at least, with my stock car.

That 6.3 must be quick because you have one of the stronger 55's. Good job any way and thats good luck finding someone that will play with you. I pull up on vipers and 996's,997's and no one ever wants to play but the pro 5.0 stangs and hondas and subies. If any one is interested I have a set of bfg dr 275/40/18 up for sale. They made 2 passes and 1 burn out, but not a good one as I forgot to turn off TC. PM me if any one is interested

Where is this gonna be? We have a similar track day in Maryland on the 18th. All we need is a 63. Have a few E55's, kleemann stage 4 CLS55, C32, a couple modded 996TT's, M5, M6, Ford GT, few supra's, etc etc etc coming.

I have not had the opportunity to tune it yet with the bigger blower and meth injection. I'm leaving town on Sunday for 2 weeks and will be returning the 17th, so no time between now and then
