e63 paddles, horrible

was at caliber in anacrime (anaheim) hills.
they had a silver e63.
i went up to it just to check out the paddles.
what the **** was mb thinking. i pressed the top part of the paddle and the whole thing flexed so much it was insane. i could see them braking during spirited driving. it flexed (a lot) and only then did it actually make the click(press the button or activate, whatever you wanna call it)

all this quality is going back up talk is bull****

its even more flimsy than my buttons

I'm wit cha. I saw one yesterday. Makes me like my 55 even more. Not to mention my dynamic seats that the 63 does not have.

There's a post in the SLK55 forum about the same thing. The 07s come with paddles like the E63 and thiers broke off the first few days of use.

wow, one min everyones wanting paddle upgrades, including myself, and now?! lol.. wasnt there a brabus wheel or something posted up on here that appeared to have metal paddles??? maybe i remember incorrectly, but thats what i think i saw?

lol, how pissed off would you be after picking up your brand new AMG merc then having to pick up a broken piece of plastic off the floor after a few days!!!! sounds totally dodge, im thinking surely this must be a mistake! how could they release the paddles if they are truly THAT flimsy?!

Any other first hand accounts from 63 owners?!

MB should try using more of this amazing material, it's called metal, instead of so much freaking plastic!

wow! what inane chatter. have new 63 and the entire car is much smoother, and at least as fast as a strong 55 ( which i traded). the entire transmission, including the paddles, are excellent and so far superior to smg in the m5. really there needs to be more authentic feedback from actual 63 owners than speculative prattle.

Paddles should be on the column like a Ferrari, not on the wheel. I't easy to trip the buttons (or paddles) while turning. Bad design, IMO.

the smg paddles are a billion times better/stronger.
they also feel much better/smoother and you feel a connection to the car that the amg buttons/paddles lack

Metal kinda sucks on a hot day though... especially since MB got rid of the "REST" feature and the solar panels!!

really, now, you can't mean that you think smg at the 5or 6 stting is smooth and connected! have you ever driven either the m5 or 6? the shifts are so violent that i can't believe that there won't be warranty issues during the life of the car if one drives it aggressively. i say this in light of a brief ownership of an m5. in any case, the new transmission in the 63 cars is excellent.

I believe they are made out of metal. I remember thinking how hot they were one day when I got into the car. Then they cooled off quickly. I believe this topic all much ado about nothing. I am sure its possible for someone to break them if they pull on them hard enough. However, my perception is that they are not poorly engineered, and they strike the right balance between strength and weight.

What is important is that they are a great improvement over the previous buttons, not whether or not a muscle-bound driver can break them in a momentary loss of self control.

I thought they were aluminum, and if they arent they certainly should be. I much rather have buttons than flimsy plastic paddles. I would want a nice solid 'clack' when I change gears, not a little click. Weight is also obviously not an issue, so why wouldnt they be aluminum? Is MB getting cheap on us? It would be sad if MB interriors start to look like BMWs

check out the new E92 coupe interior, you might be surprised. I know I was when I first saw it.

Honestly, the E63 is not doing anything for me, exterior style-wise, interior-wise, and performance-wise. The only element that I like is the rear decklid spoiler. As many other E55 owners have stated, if you owned a 55, there's no point of trading up to a 63, unless you really fall for the face-lifted style.

Why? Because it serves the same function as the C55 to the C32. The improved driving dynamics of the 63 helped a car / chassis in its mid-life cycle to keep up with its new competitors, i.e. the M5 and S6. It's still a big mid-size sedan that's fun to drive, if you don't live in the Northeastern USA. I'm pretty sure the engine is silky smooth yet powerful just like any other engines Mercedes Benz have built over the years. However, the tank-like size of the E-class is not as appealing to me compared to about a year ago. Sometimes I wished I had not traded in my old car for the 55, and I still can't get over the fact that MBUSA refused to bring the CLK63 Coupe here.

I'm hoping maybe the next W204 AMG or M3 will fulfill my need of a fairly powerful car yet maneuverable in the narrow streets of Boston. I guess we'll see in about a year.

exactly my point

btw,
this has nothing to do w/ the transmission itself, i think a couple of you misunderstood me. its only about the quality of the paddles and the way they feel when used.

completely agree.

but my goal now is to own a E63 in about 3 yrs knowing that it should be more reliable and won't feel as old as the E55, but if you do own a E55 now, there's no point in trading in for the E63.

Fine, MB should cover them in a non skid rubber or leather; but a nice light weight alloy does wonders vs plastic.

Its just a paddle. If you dont like it, replace it. It does the same function as an E55 "button" they just changed the shape of the button into a paddle. I'm sure it can be done for E55's as well. SMG is horrible in a parking lot too.
