Is E63 an inch lower than E55?

I noticed the front end of my E63 scraping a little more easily exiting driveways and going over dips than my E55, so I pulled out the tape measure. My very rough measurements of the front of the car seem to indicate the E63 is a full inch lower. I measured both cars with the engine running and the car in its normal (not elevated) position.

Its possible that it is just the front lower spoiler that is lower on the E63, not the chassis. I thought I would toss this observation out to our little shark pit to see what gets churned up. Does anyone know if the whole car is lower? Maybe there is someone out who can give a more definitive answer. This might indicate better handling on the E63 too.

In any event, if you have an E63, you will want to use more caution than in an E55 to avoid scraping your front end. Or you might want to be ready to press the magic "lift" button as needed.

Hmmm, can you make some coparative measurements between the center of the rim and the edge of the wheel well?

The front nose looked longer to me, which would give you a tighter approach angle??

Handling wise, can you comment on the differences? Keep in mind that the steering rack and shocks are different one on your '03 than on an '05/'06.

Lastly, each car is a different beast. It may be possible that your E55 was calibrated taller and your E63 is lower?? Again, the measurements from wheel center to edge of wheel well will let us compare.

Have you already posted pics of the car? If not, shame on you. Let's see that thing!!

I think it is lower, I have seen both side by side and the E63 did look lower in the front and rear.

Better hope the strut has not failed. Due to fricking terrorism I will not receive my strut from Germany for 3 more weeks as it must be sailed on a ship due to it containing harzardous materials.

With the pointed front end on the E63, I agree that the car looks like it has more overhang. I was not able to measure that dimension to compare it with an E55. It is possible that this factors into the car's increased likelihood of front scraping. However, since the front end is about an inch lower, I think that is the bigger factor. Please note that I do not raise this matter as a complaint myself. It is not as though the E63 excessively scrapes the front end. Its just that a slight amount more caution is necessary than in the E55 to avoid scraping.

It seems the handling has been improved in the car, but I dont want to put forth my opinions as more than that. I have not done back-to-back testing of my 2 cars on the same roads.

Here are the measurements I got off of my cars, using your suggested point of reference (distance from center of wheel to edge of wheel well). These meaurements were made with the engines running, and on stock tires and wheels.

Front
E63 13 7/8" E55 14 3/8"

Rear
E63 13 1/4" E55 13 3/4"

As another imprecise reference point, I thought I would see how low the cars were underneath at a point in between the front and rear wheels. I measured the distance between the ground and the bottom of the car, with the engines running.

E63 5 1/2" E55 6 1/4"

Regarding pics, I have posted a few.

That should definitely not be a complaint!! Nice. All nice cars have a thing or two you have to watch for. Killer observation. I'll compare it to my '06 later, just as a reference. For now, ENJOY the ride. P.S., be careful about mentioning it to the dealer as they may purposefully RAISE it just thinking they are helping.

Gorgeous car!!
