New E63 Owner
I’ve made a few posts lately about my disappointment with the E63 and how it compared to my SLK55 and E550. Last year I met the Managing Director of AMG at a Hockenheimring event. He gave me his card and told me to contact him if I ever needed anything. On Monday I sent him an e-mail expressing my feedback on the E63. Would you believe that he personally called me from Germany yesterday to discuss the E63 and the concerns expressed in my e-mail. Now that’s Class with a capital C!
He told me that the E63 was designed to be much more of an athlete than the E55 and that it’s been engineered to outperform the E55 on the race track. The E55 he admitted is a better performer on the bottom 1/3 of the power band but the 63 is really designed to shine on the second 2/3rd’s of the power band and that it should be marginally quicker in the ¼ mile as well. AMG is very proud of the athleticism of the E63 and feels it’s a better all around package then the E55.
I asked him about the possibility of the E63 getting a twin turbo motor in 2009 and he did not acknowledge those rumors (No surprise there).
After his call I went to Euro Motorcars in Germantown, MD and purchased a Black E63 with the P2 package, Parktronic and Electronic Trunk Closer. I drove the car to Dulles Airport in Virginia and was thoroughly impressed with its athleticism and fuel economy. In moderate traffic I was averaging 21 MPG. When driving conservatively the E63 feels like a C230. It’s so smooth and docile it really feels like a 4 cylinder when being driven conservatively.
I’ve love the E55’s motor but feel that its breaks are "Uncle Fester" spooky and that the transmission is too benign. My initial impression is that the E55 definitely has more low end grunt but I’m looking forward to driving the E63. This particular E63 feels much more responsive than the other examples that I’ve driven.
I’m hoping to join some local AMG enthusiasts at Capital Raceway in Crofton, MD on Monday and to compare the E63 to some of the E55’s.

AHHHHH!!!
So you're the E63 that Ahmad is talking about joining us at the track on Monday. Yeah man, bring it. Can't wait to see it. I won't be tracking my slow *** E500 but I (meaning my brother) will be bringing an 8 second car.
You gonna let me do some burnouts in it?

I'd say if you pulled some upper 12's, you could quiet the lynch mob. Silence with mid or lower 12's, but I bet you'll hit upper 12's no problem.
Good luck tomorrow.
Good luck tomorrow.

rake..
Great post. Good call e-mailing that guy in Germany. I knew the e63 was better than all these e55 guys are making it out to be-for the most part, just kidding!..
Coming from an e46 M3 and owning my e63 for two weeks now, I knew this car was significantly faster than the M3, which interesting enough performed like it sounds Derek's e63 performed for him.
Will be interesting to see what these drags will produce for the e63. When I get a few more miles under my belt, I will take it to Darlington.
Good luck to the e63's on their 1/4 times. Make us other e63 guys proud!

Congrats...For the US market I feel the 55 engine is best. I'm not sure why a car that's better in higher rpm's and the race track would suit you better(maybe you will road race this car?) but enjoy it in good health! Did you ask him about the dissapointing dyno and track results? Haven't had any problems with the "breaks" (it's brakes BTW).

Congrats on the purchase! Welcome to the E63 brotherhood! We need to stick together to survive the E55 assault ! (Before all you E55'rs start flaming me, I am just kidding around and love the E55 too).
