Pulley Upgrades without ECU Upgrades

Pulley Upgrades without ECU Upgrades
There are a few E55's running around that have done pulley swaps without ECU upgrades. How necessary is the ECU upgrade? I might also be moving back to California, will I have a problem switching to 91 octane with no ECU upgrade?

Just curious...what would be your reason for not doing ECU?
I have seen Cory's response enough to recite it from memory. "You can do it, but you just won't be taking full advantage of the power that is safely available to you without ECU reflash. They are intended to work hand in hand"

There were some previous threads (do a search for "asp pulley") stating very little gain if any when adding both the ecu and pulley when compared to just adding the pulley. I got the impression that the program was to prevent the engine from leaning out even though the 55 engine runs rich anyway at WOT.
I'm sure Cory would like to sell the package instead of an $800 pulley. What is it going for now anyway?

I don't have a pulley on my E55 yet. I do have it on my C32 without a ECU flash.
on my C32, the pulley on its on is the best bang for the buck
I can pay $900 for the ECU flash from Powerchip, but it will only yield another 10 to 15 RWHP at the most.
The ODPS alone its 20 to 25 RWHP and you don't need to worry about the ECU re-flashing from the dealer or getting the right files .. ect
It is best to get both, I agree. But I have ran 9 months with my set up and no problems at all..

You dont need the ECU. The stock ECU already has the range to handle the extra 3 psi. S/C boost varies a little by temperature anyway and the stock ECU has the extra boost cells to handle some overboost. What the ECU would do is modify your fuel and timing curve. So you'd gain some power from it IF it wasn't already optimal from the factory. I wouldn't buy a canned map.

Hmmmm, finally someone else thinking of going my route. I'm adding the RENNtech pulley and headers, and considering no ECU flash. I'm trying to get the truth about the timing getting advanced by STAR. MB had told me it is a no go but I thought they were just blowing me off, until i read VRUS' post on the octane settings. Now, I am thinking what I heard may be true and that there is no "easy" way to tune the fuel maps.
