Twin Turbo Charge our 55's?

What do you all think the results would be if we TT'd our 55's like Joe did with his Ford GT?

Personally, I'd commit to a TT kit if it was a reasonable price, say, $8-15k. The parts and fabrication is the easy part. Look at the TT kits from APS for the Vettes, GTO's, 350Z, etc. I'm sure a similar system could be fabricated for the E55 with similar material costs. The real issue lies with tuning. If Kleemann is having trouble getting around re-flashed ecu's, imagine dealing with a totally different type of F/I.

Because not everyone has an extra $100k to spend.

I, too, would like to see someone come out with a turbo kit. Turbo > SC.

How about an engine swap with a v12 tt? It may be more cost effective. I could be wrong though. I'm confident you can get a few pennies for the 55k motor as well.

Damn... You guys are killing me.... this is too funny... Remember that "BIG" project I hinted at a couple of times in another thread... well.. this was it.

I approached another member of this board about this very project.. LOL..

After I saw the video of Joe's GT TT (and I forwarded a link to the other member he was sold on the idea). We talked to the people who made the kit for Joe about building a kit for our car. I have the tuning equipment, and the "other member" was going to use his car as the prototype vehicle....

I was keeping a lid on this because the two of us haven't gotten far enough along in the discussions to figure out how we were going to work together on it.

I was targetting $14,999 as the retail price.. 2 x GT25R turbos, manifolds, custom intake plenum, enlarged TB (was looking into a 90mm), air filters, etc, etc, etc and a custom ECU tune.

How many of you guys are seriously interested in something like this at a $15K pricepoint?

I guess I better call him and have a serious chat about it. I'll leave his name out of it for now unless he decides to chime in here.

LOL I have been thinking of TT a E55 for a long time. It can be done.

But I think we need bigger turbos than GT25r. I can get compressor maps for pretty much any turbo and know a guy here locally that can hook us up with details on the right turbo for our application and power requirements.

I am in at that price. (did I really say that)

Here is what a guy in Mexico told me on another forum. He has a kleemann S8 CLK55 and says the following: "Because that is what my new C55 will have, a custom built brand new AMG 5.4L S/C engine (i.e., low compression cylinders, ceramic coating, port matched, etc...) with "big" twin turbos and an Afflaterbach tuned 5 speed tranny and LS Differencial with a totally different set up to hadle the torque etc... You can imagine the engine bay will also be entirely different in order to fit all this stuff plus turbos, huge intercoolers and the like. The car also gets a custom sheet metal and CF wide body treatment to fit 265/30's up front and 315/25's rear with. Braks are updrated to 8 piston fronts and 4 piston rears together with DTM style. Interior gets CF, Alcantara roof and dash board, red and black AMG rear and front seats. Oh well, I think you get the picture!"
He is expecting delivery in late november, early december. We will see.

I've always thought our supercharger engagement seemed shockingly similar in intent as how Bosch ME-Motronic turbo cars use the wastegate actuation to "bypass" the turbo in light load conditions (and as a safety device).

$15K would not be a slam dunk for me ... the gut check is how much "hassle" I have to do with mods with the SC at the $15K point and the horsepower output (IMC, that gets 600HP with Renntech).

I'd put up with quirky turbo lag over the bucking of the SC engagement. Which reminds me, I could be wrong, but I think the TC lock-up may also be related with SC engagement functions ... just based on how the car feels. Someone savvy with data logging could figure that one out, though.

This is probably a very silly question, but couldn't we just crank up the boost on the supercharger and get the same result? I'm guessing the answer is no, but if any could explain why, I'm sure that I am not the only one who would like to hear a detailed explanation.

The power band is different with turbo's and s/c. You wont get the low end torque but you'll have crazy high end hp.

Is it safe? Can the motors handle the extra boost? What is the flow of air?

Ram Air > Turbo Air > S/C Air > Engine?

<hiding from wife> VRUS -- I would be interested for under 15k </hiding from wife>

Plus the fact that the supercharger is eating at least 100 hp at max revs.....

Theres only one way to find out! If you have alot of $$$ to spend you could always build the engine with forged internals and then run crazy boost through a turbo. I'm sure 1000hp is attainable with a built motor. I've seen a BMW 328i with stock internals have 635whp with some big *** turbos. With forged internals he's trying to add more boost and hit 1000whp and thats just a 2.8L motor. Imagine what our 5.4L motors could do!

1. Guys here is the deal at whatever boost we run on the SC now we could run the same boost on turbos and get more power. All you have to do is look at the 600 class V12. Pretty much identical engines except its 32valve vs 24valve for 55K

2. You wont need to have all the front Mount ICs that you see the imports running either (probably wouldnt fit and would be a nitemare as far as plumbing). You could use the same setup we have now but change around for the turbos of course Just like that hot Ford GT(the MB v12 turbos use the same system we have now)

3. Lag will only be a issue if you go to big turbos. Lag really wont be a problem on a engine this size if the turbos are matched for the engine.(again Look at the V12s

4. Yes you can just crank the SC boost up but it will even rob you more of power and add more heat. Again a turbo wont rob you of that power like the SC.

I think the key question is here is how much boost can this engine safely handle. Then the next question will be is there enough fuel (big enough injectors to handle it). Next is what are the internals of the 55k engine ( This you would really need to know if you are going to run some big BOOST) Next will be when will this car start to detonate on pump gas boost wise ( that will pretty much give you your limit ). My bet is 15psi will be easy, max 18-19. Race Gas of course is a whole different ball game.

I think most guys if they would want to drop 15k would expect a power level of easy 600 with the ability to run higher with supporting mods. We have the Tranny to handle now. Its a no brainer.

Here is the video link for those of you who do not know who joe is. After watching you may also consider TT'ing your 55!

Our K2-K4's are already running close to 600 hp. If I were to drop 15k, I would be looking for over 800hp.

Back to the internals... I thought our 55's already have forged internals???

My only question is the ECU. Could it possibly be done, reprogramming the ECU to function with all the details of twin turbs instead of a blower??

I always thought the "ECU Devil" was the main reason we can't do a lot to these things. Being lazy tonight and haven't read the whole thread so if it's already an easy thing, nevermind.
